Sony Is Already Offering A PS Plus Refund For January

It looks like Sony is getting off to a flying start in 2021 as it's forced to offer a PS Plus refund in the very first month of the year. In 2020, the PlayStation Plus subscription service offered up major titles like Uncharted 4: A Thief's EndStar Wars Battlefront II, and Bioshock: The Collection alongside big indie hitters including Bugsnax, Goat Simulatorand (of course) Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

When it comes to PS Plus, you get plenty of bang for your buck, and paired with the PlayStation Plus Collection offering everything from God of War to Resident Evil 7, PS5 players, in particular, have a fully stocked arsenal of games to plough through. January 2021's PS Plus offerings include the likes of action-RPG GreedFall, which follows colonial forces in 17th Century when they stumble across a mythical island packed with monsters and magic.

Following in the footsteps of July 2020 including the critically acclaimed Rise of the Tomb Raider, there's also the massive addition of Eidos-Montreal's Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It neatly rounds off the trilogy that was started with the rebooted Tomb Raider back in 2013. However, it's the final game that's causing a stir.

Why is Sony offering a PS Plus refund?

The problem comes from the inclusion of the PS5 Maneater. The aptly named ShaRkPG was first released in May 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. As well as a Nintendo Switch version on the way in the first half of 2021, Maneater was ported to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Although Maneater was supposed to an expansion of the 2014 multiplayer called Depth, it soon grew to become its own entity and even has references to the Jaws movies.

In Maneater, players take control of a female bull shark who has to survive in the ocean, continually devouring fish and humans with the ultimate goal of killing the fisherman who killed her mother and left her disfigured. It sounds like a typically fun way to waste a few hours as your stalk the seven seas with a taste for blood. That being said, you'd be pretty annoyed if you'd just bought it off your own back, only to find it's going free in January.

How do you get your PS Plus refund?

For those peeved players who've already parted with their hard-earned money, there's good news. Sony has automatically refunded anyone who'd recently bought Maneater. It's a refreshing change considering the company has repeatedly come under fire for its rigorous refund process making it notoriously hard to claw back your cash.

Posting on Reddit, u/BraeWhyit noticed they were offered a refund for Maneater after they'd bought it in November. The redditor explained that the message promised Sony will refund the purchase price of Maneater to their PS Store wallet. There was also a message stating, "This will not affect your ability to play the game as we have not removed the game from your library". Even better, it sounds like you'll get to keep Maneater if you end your PS Plus subscription.

Normally PS Plus titles are locked into their free period, however, you can munch until your heart's content if you've already bought Maneater. With Maneater just receiving next-gen upgrades, there couldn't be a better time to take a dip and see if you're onto a "swimmer" with this one.
