PlayStation Plus Rumoured For A Price Hike
Ah, PlayStation Plus. The service that helps keep fans online works to a certain degree - earning PlayStation stacks simply because it’s the final barrier between gamers being able to take their favourite games online. But for many, it falls pretty short.
In fact, this feeling is beginning to hit Sony in the wallet, as more than one million players cancelled their subscription to the service in the last quarter. It's apparently shown PlayStation that actually, something might need to change. They’ve taken this advice, but the change reportedly in the works is likely to be a controversial one.
Could Sony Be Boosting PS Plus’ Price?
The latest news comes in the wake of Sony’s purchase of anime streaming service Crunchyroll. This landmark deal cost Sony a hefty $1.2 billion, in the hopes of creating a unified anime streaming service alongside Funimation. Although a big anime-themed change could be coming to PS Plus, we have to ask what the cost will be.
As reported by Eurogamer, Sony might be getting ready to offer a more expensive version of PS plus that could come with some anime-themed perks - presumably a free subscription to Crunchyroll. The site claims to have heard of “plans to potentially offer Crunchyroll as part of a more expensive premium PlayStation Plus offering”, so those in the crossover of PlayStation and anime fans could be in for a treat.
Crunchyroll already has a collaboration with Xbox Game Pass, so this would be yet another opportunity for the service to get involved with the gaming giants of the world.
Will This Affect The Price Of Regular PlayStation Plus?
The suggestion of a more expensive PS Plus is one that might prick some eyebrows, but it’s hard to imagine that PlayStation will burden players with an unwanted and mandatory subscription service. It’s likely to materialise as a new tier of PS Plus, that will offer a Crunchyroll subscription for another few $/£ a month on top of the current pricing.
So, don’t panic, PS Plus users - your price isn’t likely to be hiking soon if you don’t want it to. For you My Hero Academia fans, keep an eye out, because the service may have just gotten a whole lot better.
