Sony continues to surprise us, with the unlikely reveal of a hidden menu feature on the PlayStation. It's been a whopping 15 years since the PS3 first burst into our lives and made a name for itself alongside the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii in the seventh generation of games consoles. Even though the PS3 was discontinued in Europe in early 2016, Japan held out as the last territory until May 2017.

Despite the PS3's now-defunct status, many of us still have the console knocking around and sitting pride of place in our gaming collection. We love dusting off the console for a revisit to BioShockGrand Theft Auto IV, or Mass Effect 2, and with the recent news that the PS3 store had been saved from closure, now's a great time to revisit this classic in all its glory. Considering the PS3 has been around for so long, you might think you've unearthed every secret the console has - well, not quite.

What is the hidden PlayStation 3 menu feature?

Posting on Reddit, u/JhonnyRivers28 showed off a hidden feature where the particles on the menu screen move in time to the controller. While the PlayStation 5 has made the most of the unique features of the DualSense Controller. and even spent a whole game exploring them with Astro's Playroom, it turns out Sony has been hiding features in its controllers for a while now. It's not exactly the most ground-breaking feature, but there's something hypnotic about seeing the dots dance to the tune of your DualShock controller.

The post soon blew up on Reddit, with other players being suitably impressed by the hidden PS3 menu feature. One player wrote, "From years of having a PS3 have I never noticed this, I guess it just shows the level of effort sony put in at the time". Another added, "I really wish they would give us a manual that pointed out all these little Easter eggs. It'd be nice to learn of this stuff quickly and not a decade later", while a third said, "I noticed it when I died in Batman Arkham city and threw the controller and the particles moved too".

Even if the hidden feature is only small, others pointed out it's a great way to figure out a genuine DualShock controller with motion controls. The PS3 is remembered for some great motion controller games, and if you didn't have a genuine controller, you'd struggle to play Resident Evil 5The Last of Us, and BioShock: Infinite. Sony might be known for hiding Easter eggs in its games, but it's great that devs also put a little extra effort into the consoles and controllers.

When the PS5 launched, players loved the tiny detail that the iconic circle, square, triangle and cross were etched into the DualSense controller. All those years ago, Sony was hiding special details in its controllers. There are probably more secrets out there, but alongside the PS3 having a secret menu, the famous PS2 startup screen actually related to the number of games you had installed on the console. That's enough for now, we're off to spend hours waving the DualShock 3 at our PS3 screens to watch some dancing particles.
