The shout caster Mitch “Uber” Leslie has given a glimpse of the behind the scenes production of the Overwatch League broadcast and what it looks like from a commentators perspective. The picture posted on his private Twitter account shows the setup that he’s working with, made up of a sound mixer, a studio microphone, a ring light, and no less than three monitors.

Curious community members asked Uber about the purpose of those different screens and how the broadcast worked on a technical level and he answered with a descriptive insight into the functionality of his setup.

According to Uber, the left-most monitor showed his personal notes he made in preparation of the game that he’d be casting as well as real-time stats. Presumably, the monitor had to be pixelated as Overwatch League has its own proprietary feed of real-time statistics that feed casters information about statistical outliers that happened during each game.

The lower-right monitor displayed the broadcasting software OBS which was set up to send a feed of his camera to the production team directly while the left half of the same screen shows the actual Overwatch League stream.

Perhaps at least initially confusing, the observer feed was found on the top right monitor. The position of the screen, however, makes sense when taking into account how most commentators go about casting esports matches. Standing up and with their full-body in motion, gesturing and nodding away, a screen at eye-level of these actions is the most practical setup.

In a follow-up tweet, Uber also disclosed that he has been using a sound mixer called the GoXLR which allowed to regulate the sound level of different sources such as his co-caster or the game sound individually.

Of course, a detailed description of the beverage on his table wasn’t missing either.

To each their own…
