Overwatch 2 Leaks Suggest New Customisable Legendary Skins
A survey in German has been emailed to seemingly random Overwatch players to gather market data for Overwatch 2’s various editions. Included in the survey are descriptions of various features that may be included in the game, and among them is a hint that Legendary skins may be customisable in the highly-anticipated sequel to Overwatch.
Unfortunately for us English-speakers the whole survey is in German, but with the magic of Google Translate we can see exactly what it says: "When Overwatch 2 releases, the base game may contain different types of exclusive content and features . . . How appealing do you find the following features when bundled with Overwatch 2?"
The survey then lists various extras that are fairly self-explanatory; dance emotes, victory poses, sprays and credits. There are however, some more options that are much more exciting:
"XP Boosts: XP Boosts temporarily increase the amount of experience points players receive at the end of matches so that they can level up more quickly. Legendary Skins: Skins are cosmetic extras that the player can use to customise the appearance of their heroes. Legendary skins can completely change the appearance of heroes and sometimes contain additional voice lines or alternative announcements in the use of ultimate skills.
"Legendary Skins Pack: Selection of 5 legendary skins with a common theme (e.g. Blackwatch, the original Overwatch, etc.). Customisable Legendary Skins: Special types of legendary skins which the player can adapt to their preferences (e.g. colour combinations, outfit variants etc.)."
The ‘XP Boost’ mentioned, which at first might seem obvious, could actually be referring to battle pass XP rather than traditional account experience. Following the success of games like Fortnite, any multiplayer game that can have a battle pass does have a battle pass, and it wouldn’t be a surprise for Overwatch to follow suit. Rather than being able to simply buy levels though, Overwatch 2 seems to be taking the approach of multiplying your XP gains for a certain time period or number of games.
Most exciting though is the suggestion of Legendary Skin packs and customisation. Legendary Skin packs with a theme like Blackwatch or Talon would prove extremely popular, and different editions of the game could contain different skin packs. This is backed up further on in the survey, where there seems to be a €79.99 version of the game that includes five legendary skins.
Customisable skins are also probably one of the most requested features for Overwatch 2, as although the skins in Overwatch look great, there isn’t a huge amount of variety. Being able to swap out one weapon model for another or mixing and matching outfits would result in infinitely more personalisation, making skins even more desirable.
While we don’t yet know how far the customisation will go, or whether it will even end up in the final game, this is a step in the right direction.
