Pokemon Go took the world by storm in 2016, lifting gamers from the cushions of their sofas and gaming chairs to the outside world in a hunt to catch 'em all. Boasting fun and engaging gameplay alongside great health benefits, the Pokemon Go era has firmly etched itself in gaming folklore and the hearts of many Nintendo fanatics.

Despite multiple attempts from other game developers, nobody has been able to replicate such success. Niantic split from Nintendo and teamed with Warner Bros to encapsulate the wizarding world, creating Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. However, not even the loyal delinquents (like myself) could make the title overcome Pokemon Go's popularity, with the game being met by the Avada Kedavra spell.

Now, the power duo has reformed, with Niantic and Nintendo pairing up again to create a new AR mobile game based on the popular plant-like creatures: Pikmin.

CEO of Niantic, John Hanke, said: "As we continue to expand our games portfolio, it was a natural next step to team up with Nintendo. We’re looking forward to shaping the future of AR together, bringing Nintendo’s beloved game characters to life for mobile game players around the world."

The title will become the first of a string of apps that the developers will publish together following the success of Pokemon Go.

Whilst only a few details have been given on how the Pikmin mobile game will differ from Pokemon Go and stand as a unique, the developers are aiming for a release later this year.

Let's hope that the plant-based characters don't attract many bugs to the game, though.
