New Splinter Cell Is Dubbed Ubisoft's Halo Infinite
Ah, Splinter Cell. The cult-favourite spy thriller franchise has been dormant for too long, and fans are starting to itch. Ubisoft has been reluctant to engage with the series, but could that change?
Perhaps it's because Ubisoft knows its next offering has to be perfect to appease long-time fans, or maybe they're just focused on the rest of the Ghost Recon franchise? Either way, it's been a while.
And now, there's supposedly a new title in the works - fans rejoice, but do it cautiously, as the next Splinter Cell game will be bringing unprecedented change to the franchise.
New Splinter Cell Could Have 'Halo Infinite-Style Open World'
Popular leaker Tom Henderson has suggested that though there's a new Splinter Cell title on the way, it could be bringing with it an open world that's similar to that of Halo Infinite's campaign.
Henderson claims on Twitter that the next game in the franchise is coped as an "open world of sorts", making it a "more stealthy version of Assassin's Creed".
It's a big change for the series, and one that could yet jeopardise its atmosphere in favour of building an all-new legacy.
Can A Splinter Cell Game Work With An Open World?
We'll be frank - an open-world game starring Sam Fisher is an unconvincing concept. The idea of running around in a vast world - only to begin creeping through a stealthy mission in a building - seems deeply jarring.
Unless it has the variety and often silliness of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, then there's very little chance the game will succeed, or even feel like a Splinter Cell game.
Fans are going to have a field day tearing the concept to shreds, and they could be right to do so.
Still, we'll never know how the game will look until it's in our hands - but it'll still be nice for the franchise to make its return. Welcome back, Sam Fisher.
