South Park Creators Are Working On A New Game
Howdy-Ho, we're heading back to the troubled town of South Park, with the show's creators working on a whole new era of the foul-mouthed comedy. While there have been plenty of South Park games over the years, there's an ambitious new project that will deliver a 3D game (presumably) for next-gen consoles.
First released in 1997, South Park has made an impressive name for itself and is never afraid to shy away from controversy. In a time before Family Guy was grabbing headlines, South Park was the show your parents didn't want you watching. In 2021, creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have struck a massive deal for a multi-franchised future of episodes, movies, and games.
What is the new South Park game?
Posting on Twitter, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier pointed to a report that Stone and Parker have netted a cool $900 million from ViacomCBS Inc., with plans "to invest in a wide range of creative endeavours, including [...] a 3D video game that is set in the world of 'South Park'."
It's unclear who is making the new game, however, it will be set within the world of the show. Previously, Ubisoft has published The Stick Of Truth in 2014 and Fractured But Whole in 2017. Both were 2D RPGs, meaning the latest iteration sounds like something completely new.
For those of a certain age, you might remember we had a 3D South Park adventure with 1998's South Park that premiered on the Nintendo 64. Back then, the show was just finding its stride and the game was a direct tie-in. It wasn't quite Super Mario 64, but as a faithful adaptation of the source material, was a must-have for South Park fans.
When can we expect the new South Park game?
This is the first we've heard about a new South Park game, however, the original article goes on to claim the dynamic duo have founded a new company that will bankroll several projects - including a new movie for Paramount. Some 309 episodes later, and it looks like South Park is still going strong.
The Stick of Truth was a joint venture between Obsidian Entertainment and South Park Digital Studios, while The Fractured but Whole (nice pun) was developed with South Park Digital Studios and Ubisoft's internal studios. With the announcement generating a lot of buzz, we're excited to see what a 3D South Park game can deliver.
Unfortunately, there isn't any more information about the new South Park game and when it will be released. Until there's the official word from up high, let your imagination run wild. All we need now is someone to confirm a Simpsons: Hit & Run remaster and our nostalgia quota will be nicely filled.
