New Jurassic World Video Game Teased For 2021
Those "clever girls" at Universal seem to be teasing a new Jurassic World video game that has been 65 million (and 28) years in the making. As the world waits with bated breath to see how Colin Trevorrow rounds off the latest trilogy of movies with Jurassic World: Dominion, it doesn't look like we'll have to wait until 2022 to step back through those iconic gates and into this theme park of terror.
Since 1993, Universal has churned out Jurassic Park movies like nobody's business. From the humble roots of Steven Spielberg's seminal outing, to the lows of Joe Johnson's Jurassic Park III, things were thankfully rebooted with Jurassic World in 2015. It wasn't just a fresh-faced cast of Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt that breathed new life into the seemingly extinct franchise. Following the release of Jurassic World, there's been a boom of tie-in video games, too.
What is the new Jurassic World video game?
The tease of a new Jurassic World video game comes from the official Jurassic World Twitter account. There's a suspicious tweet of a dinosaur lurking in some shrubbery. We can't tell if it's a T-Rex or a Velociraptor, but either way, it isn't good news for the human race. What's interesting is the fact it looks like it's made with video game graphics. While that wouldn't normally be enough to go off, it was followed by a reply from the Jurassic World Evolution game account. The sister account simply replied with a series of side-eye emojis - suggesting something is going on behind the scenes.
Launched in 2018, Jurassic World Evolution was effectively Zoo Tycoon for dinosaurs. The game has grown in popularity since its original release, and was even ported over to the Nintendo Switch as the Jurassic World Evolution: Complete Edition in November 2020. While the various DLCs and updates have teased this is the end of the road for Evolution, it's entirely possible Frontier Developments is working on something new. While Evolution was released to coincide with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, it makes sense that all parties want to start cashing in on the Dominion hype.
When could we see the new Jurassic World video game?
Piecing together the evidence, the new Jurassic World game could be lurking in the bushes. It just so happens that the cryptic tease comes ahead of Jeff Goldblum's appearance at Summer Game Fest that kicks off on June 10. Goldblum has done a lot in his career, but is probably best-known for playing the open-shirted Dr. Ian Malcolm in the Jurassic series. It just so happens he's reprising his role for Dominion alongside other OG stars Sam Neill and Laura Dern. It's also important to point out Goldblum lent his vocals to Evolution.
Saving a new Jurassic World game until Dominion's release next year is possible, but let's remember the movie was supposed to release this year. If the developers have kept on track with a new game, it would make sense to release it early to make the most of the fanbase, then possibly drop a massive update when Dominion releases next year. It just so happens Trevorrow's next entry is due to release on June 10 next year (insert side-eye emoji).
Whatever is going on, there's a carnivorous fanbase of Jurassic fans who can't get enough of the video games. For those of us who are a certain age, we'll have fond memories of hopping in the back of a makeshift Ford Explorer and blasting raptors for SEGA's on-rails Jurassic Park in the local arcade. The industry has obviously come a long way since then, but if a new Jurassic World game is on the way, we say, "Hold onto your butts!"
