Battlefield 2042 has a lot of eyes on it right now. Even from the game’s reveal, developer DICE had a lot of pressure to carry as the first new-gen Battlefield title. With a controversial beta and lead competitor Vanguard launching in the next few days, it’s under the harsh spotlight.

Plus, as a new-gen shooter with massive destruction, large teams, and natural disasters dictating its gameplay, there are a lot of assumptions that Battlefield 2042 should exemplify the need to have a new-gen console. No pressure, eh? Sadly, though, it might not live up to it - as one Battlefield 2042 120 FPS won’t be available on launch.

Oh. As it turns out, the 120 FPS goal that Battlefield 2042 teased won’t actually be in the game on launch. The real difference between 120 FPS and 60 FPS remains hotly debated, but considering a feature that was expected to be a part of the game from day one that actually won’t be there, it’s a bit of a bummer.

A DICE developer confirmed the news in a ResetEra thread and suggested that the current generation of consoles won’t be able to handle the heightened frames at all. Replying to one inquiry about FPS, the dev said that it’s "something to explore in post-launch, potentially".

Potentially doesn't sound too good to us. The dev concluded, "Resolution is not a problem, we are hammering the CPUs with 128 players quite severely, and the CPU requirements to jump from 60 to 120 FPS are not trivial. Reducing resolution won’t be much of a help."

When Will Battlefield 120 FPS Arrive In-Game?

Though Battlefield 2042 might struggle to make it happen, 120 FPS isn’t actually a futuristic idea. It’s technically already with us, with games like Rocket League, Knockout City and Call of Duty: Warzone already being capable of it, as Halo Infinite and Call of Duty: Vanguard are set to join the ranks.

Though Battlefield 2042 is poised to break new ground of its own accord, it’s sad that 120 FPS won’t be coming to the game. Chances are, when you’re in the midst of battle, you won’t even be able to tell the difference.
