Netflix Show Has Been Accused Of Stealing Artwork From Grand Theft Auto
A Colombian Netflix show has been accused of 'ripping off' Grand Theft Auto, by using some of their images in their title sequence.
The images were uploaded to Reddit, where certain similarities were pointed out. The below image, for example, appears to show the strap from the duffle bag in the GTA image, but in the TV show's version, the strap has been drawn, but the bag has not. Eep.
What Exactly Is The Show That's Being Accused Of Stealing GTA's Artwork?
Ironically, the name of the show is The Snitch Cartel: Origins. It was released on Netflix earlier this year, and is described as: "A Colombian TV series inspired by the real lives of Colombian drug lords that belonged to the infamous cartels of Cali, Colombia."
It currently has a 5.4/10 rating on IMDb which, to be honest, isn't bad at all.
Who Spotted The Similarities Between The Netflix Show And GTA V?
The post was uploaded by Reddit user u/Frandoy, and at the time of writing has an impressive 5.6k upvotes. They captioned the post: "There is a Colombian TV show on Netflix called "El cartel de los sapos: El origen" that has some images that look suspiciously similar to some GTA V/Online artwork".
There are five images altogether, which you can check out here.
The above image where there are men in suits leaning over a table full of cash has particularly got Reddit users' backs up. One person, who claimed to be a designer, said that this was irrefutable proof that the images were copied from GTA.
They wrote: "As a designer, there are a few immediate things you look for in these sorts of situations to see just how much of the design was stolen from something else. More often than not, a designer will copy the form of something EXACTLY because they perceive it to be perfect.
"Take for instance the third image. You can tell based off the folds of their clothing that they were taken verbatim; look at the similarities on the leather jackets, most note-ably the shapes between the inside of the arm and the edge of the jacket by the waist. The curves and cuts are almost exactly the same, almost as if someone took a piece of parchment paper and traced over the top of the original image.
"It really sucks to see stuff like this done. There’s no telling who’s to blame here (lazy graphic artist, project lead that underpayed to have a job done, etc.)."
It's unclear whether Rockstar has been made aware of the images, or if they'd even care, we'll keep you posted!
