Who’s ready to equip a big iron on their hip, and explore the Mojave Desert again to hunt Deathclaws? If you are, we’ve got just the thing for you, as Project Mojave, the mod that recreates Fallout: New Vegas in Fallout 4’s engine, has just hit early access.

What Is Project Mojave?

It’s a mod for Fallout 4, that allows the player to make their way across the North American wasteland, all the way to the Mojave Desert. To do so, players who’ve downloaded the mod need to find the plans for a long range teleporter from the dead body of a Commonwealth scientist. Once found and built, the device will teleport the player cross-country to New Vegas’ outskirts.

So far, the small team have been working on the mod for roughly four months, but have made surprising progress. Currently, the New Vegas Strip and a quarter of the map have been remade - roughly the lower portion, from Ivanpah Drylake to the I15 Highway. They’ve had to completely remake assets from New Vegas, with better textures and geometry, to better fit in the upgraded Fallout 4 engine.

Brand-new creatures have been designed, including reworks of already existing ones, like the infamous Cazadore. The modders also have remade apparel and weapons, with some completely unique works added too.

A returning feature from Fallout 4 that wasn’t present in New Vegas, is the settlement system, that allows players to create custom settlements using in-game junk. Some locations have been turned into settlements to accommodate the change, like the Invanpah Track and Nipton Road Reststop.

To those wondering if this will make the entire Fallout: New Vegas story playable in Fallout 4, that doesn’t appear to be the case, though it’s still early days. So far, it’s just a recreation of the map, and is set six years after the events of New Vegas in the year 2287. Whether this means the team will add their own story, or look how the area has evolved since the original game, is up in the air.

There was a similar mod for New Vegas itself that added the Capital Wasteland of Fallout 3 and the full campaign, called A Tale of Two Wastelands - which is, funnily enough, the easiest way of actually playing Fallout 3 on a modern PC.

If you want to play Project Mojave, it can be found on the Fallout 4 Nexus. As stated earlier, it’s not yet finished, but there is a fair amount of content to discover so far, and for any New Vegas fan, might be a must-play.
