Marvel’s Hayley Atwell Is The Next Lara Croft
Lara Croft’s appearances outside of her video games have been healing. While 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie starring Angelina Jolie was critically lambasted, Jolie took the role into the mainstream and lives on in Halloween costumes year after year.
Later on, Alicia Vikander took on the Croft moniker for the adaptation of the game series’ reboots, in a film that critics could stomach easier, and one that fans responded better to as well. Lara Croft was finally back on the big screen, and in a way that made a sequel a genuine possibility (which is technically still coming).
But, as a new Tomb Raider anime is on the way, Croft threatens to return to homes everywhere via Netflix - and the series just announced some very exciting casting news.
Hayley Atwell Is The New Lara Croft
Netflix has announced that Hayley Atwell will assume the role of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider anime coming to Netflix. You might recognise the name, as she plays the role of Peggy Carter across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing in Captain America: The First Avenger, and most recently appearing as Captain Carter in the recent animated series What If..?.
The anime series also has a pretty respectable team behind it, written and executive produced by Tasha Huo, who has previously worked on The Witcher: Blood Origin. Also attached are dj2 Entertainment Founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson - who worked on the Sonic The Hedgehog movie, plus Howard Bliss, Stephan Bugaj and Jacob Robinson are joining the team from Tractor Pants.
The series has a pretty stacked cast - but it’ll be interesting to see what the anime is actually about.
What Is The Story For The Tomb Raider Anime?
Not much is known yet of the official story of the series, but what we do know is that it follows the narrative of the Tomb Raider reboot series of games, ending with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The official synopsis reads:
“Lara Croft, one of the video game world’s most iconic adventurers, makes her anime debut in an all-new series. Picking up after the events of the highly successful Tomb Raider video-game reboot trilogy, the animated series will chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest, greatest adventure. Twenty-five years after her first game appeared, Lara continues to explore new territory.”
We can’t wait to see the series - and frankly, if it’s even half as good as the reboot series was, we’ll be more than happy.
