Since the release of the first Lego Super Mario set in August last year, something has "clicked" between those Danish bricks and the might of Nintendo. Lego Super Mario was supposed to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the portly plumber, but with the range already expanding to 27 sets, it's a collaboration that continues to grow.

From the first set including an interactive Mario that could scroll through his own recreation of Super Mario Bros., to expansions like the fiery Bowser's Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set and adorable Toad's Treasure Hunt Expansion Set, there's plenty of plastic out there. After confirmation that Luigi is on the way to join his brother, there's a new Character Pack to add some familiar faces to the party.

What's in the new Lego Super Mario set?

Posting on Twitter, the official Lego Twitter confirmed the imminent arrival of the Character Packs - Series 3. Following in the footsteps of other blind bags that add random characters to your Lego ensemble, there are 10 more kooky creations ready to join your toy box.

These are the 10 newcomers making their mark on the Lego Super Mario series:

  • 1-up Mushroom
  • Amp
  • Bony Beetle
  • Boo
  • Crowber
  • Galoomba
  • Parachute Bob-omb
  • Scuttlebug
  • Swoop
  • Torpedo Ted

Unlike the main sets that add big names like Bowser and locations like Mario's house, the blind bags are a smaller affair that chuck some lesser characters in the mix. None of the above are exactly Princess Peach, but we've to admit, the scared-looking Boo and Parachute Bob-omb are highlights.

What's next for Lego Super Mario?

The Character Pacls- Series 3 are apparently scheduled to pop up from the warp pipe on August 1. If this is the case, it's perfectly timed for the imminent arrival of Luigi. After months of speculation and rumours, Mario's taller sibling is coming to play. The Luigi Starter Course comes with the man himself and a pink Yoshi.

As well as Luigi coming with his own sounds and expressions, the set includes the pink Yoshi that Luigi can ride, as well as Bowser's henchman called Boom Boom. It's clear Nintendo and Lego are going to carry on this playtime partnership. If this is the case, expect to see special sets for the likes of Bowser and Peach further down the line. Personally, we'd just like to see a Waluigi set.
