Riot Games Announces Direction For 2022 Preseason Changes
New year, new season but in League of Legends, that also means a new pre-season with exciting new ideas being tried out before the season start. Today, Riot Games has announced its League of Legends Preseason 2022 Changes, outlining refinements to several systems within the game. They include changes to visual and mechanical aspects of how Dragon works and looks, reward progression, mythic items, challenges and their rewards.
League of Legends Preseason 2022 Changes
While the developers at Riot Games haven’t mentioned specific changes, we now know the broad strokes of what we can look forward to in the preseason. While the changes are mostly refinements to existing systems, the devs highlighted that this didn’t mean a decreased effort in their output but rather that ideas from previous seasons had room to grow.
League of Legends Preseason 2022 Changes - Elemental Dragon
Two years ago, Riot had introduced the feature under the name “the Rise of the Elements” which saw the Dragon spawn with different aspects, with the first one determining the way the map would transform based on the element which was randomly chosen. Now the team is looking to improve the impact of those elements even more.
As such, the team is looking to make the impact of Dragon’s mechanics more impactful, both from a gameplay and from a thematic point of view. In effect, it appears the developers are looking to make each game even more unique, expanding the impact that each element has on the map layout even further and telling an even more vivid visual story.
League of Legends Preseason 2022 Changes - Mythic items
With preseason 2021, the Mythic item system was introduced which brought especially powerful items into the fold, having their strength amplified based on other items in the player’s inventory. The system was ambitious and overhauled build paths completely, though the developers think that they haven’t quite used the feature to its fullest extent yet.
The dev team also says that they’ve heard the feedback on the Mythic system loud and clear, looking to implement more support items and more options for Mages, Assassins, and Tanks to increase the options these roles have in the game. Previously, choices for Mythics could feel rather stale, forcing players in clear directions without many viable choices.
League of Legends Preseason 2022 Changes - Challenges and account progression
For the achievement hunters who are looking to have more representation of their idiosyncratic playstyle in a tangible form in the game, the updates to challenges and account progression are here to tell a clearer story of who you are as a player.
Tiered progression crystals are being expanded upon with Challenges, little side quests that won’t impact your playstyle, but will reward you for the way you play League of Legends. Whether you have only ever played Udyr, love to collect skins, or only play ARAM, your style of playing League of Legends will find a reward in one of those challenges. Riot isn’t sure if Challenges will definitely be launching with preseason 2022 but are a work in progress which the devs are happy to collect feedback on.
