Jedi Survivor owners left gutted by bizarre EA requirement
Cue the evil cackle of Sheev Palpatine because Star Wars Jedi: Survivor fans have just declared EA is its very own Emperor. While Respawn Entertainment's much-hyped sequel to 2019's Jedi Survivor is posed to be one of 2023's biggest games, players are furious at the sci-fi Souls-like's bizarre requirements.
Cal Kestis is once again swinging his lightsaber, and while there's been a time jump since he escaped the clutches of Darth Vader, it's more of the same in this bigger and bolder sequel. Unfortunately, EA has changed how we're actually getting Jedi: Survivor, meaning there's a rumbling in the Force.
EA slammed for botching Jedi: Survivor's physical release
Jedi: Survivor packs a hefty install size, while a warning on the box confirms that it will require a download - regardless of whether you have a physical copy.
New Zealand retailer Mighty Ape Games confirmed this via Twitter, meaning an additional download and online connection are required if you want to play. It's a similar story to when Hogwarts Legacy locked you to the tutorial area until you downloaded the patch.

Click to enlargeThe argument spilled over into fandom, where players made their feelings clear. One wannabe Jedi fumed, "This is dumb as hell. Just have two discs," while another seethed, "This defeats a lot of the purpose of having a physical version for me, if true."
In particular, it makes us question the future of game preservation. Another added, "I feel like more and more companies are gonna stop caring about physical media this generation because they just refuse to compress their games."
The idea of digital-only games has long been a cause for concern. One worried gamer said, "This is silly. In 10 years when the download source has been shut down, no one will be able to play the game anymore." It's true that Repsawn servers have been up since 2010, but nothing lasts forever.
Not everyone was bothered. Someone concluded, "This is one of the things I really dislike about nerd culture. The collecting. They want their collection of physical discs, of pop vinyls, of spiderman original plush toys, it's like dude, that stuff is just a few years away from being yet another stratum of landfill."
Even if you're p*ssed that your physical Jedi: Survivor might not be as physical as you wanted, remember it could always be worse. It could be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 coming with no data at all on the disc.
