It Looks Like Infinity Ward Is Finally Working On Modern Warfare 2
With the Call of Duty franchise expanding at an exponential rate, it's sometimes easy for titles to get lost in the shuffle. It seems like only yesterday we were enjoying all the futuristic fun of Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare, but since then, we've had the entirety of Treyarch's Black Ops Cold War, and are already preparing for Sledgehammer's Call of Duty: Vanguard.
While the shooter series continues to have its critics, many have a soft spot for 2019's Modern Warfare. Helping us through the pandemic and introducing Warzone to the scene, the reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series also earned over $1 billion in revenue. It was only a matter of time before Infinity Ward tackled a sequel, but now, it looks closer than ever.
Is Infinity Ward working on Modern Warfare 2?
The latest scoop comes in the aftermath of Infinity Ward announcing a new Austin studio. Joining the growing roster, Infinity Ward Austin comes after branches in Los Angeles, Mexico, and Poland. We could speculate all day about what's on the way, however, noted leaker Tom Henderson claims IW Austin is specifically working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Obviously, we're not sure the mysterious game will end up being called Modern Warfare 2 - due to the fact there was already a 2009 game of the same name. Then again, when has IW ever been worried about confusing us by giving games titles that have already been used? Whatever Infinity Ward Austin is working on, you can bet it's going to be related to CoD.
When will we know more about Modern Warfare 2?
Interestingly, this isn't the first (or likely last) we've heard of Modern Warfare 2. That massive Nvidia leak mentioned something called "Project Cortez" - which was pitched as the next mainline CoD game. Last month, VGC claimed MW2's campaign will follow US special forces taking on Colombian drug cartels, with the codename being a reference to Colonel Felix Cortez from 1994's Clear and Present Danger.
Whispers of Modern Warfare 2 are nothing new, and while Nvidia has done its best to distance itself from the leaks, the ideas were all very plausible. Now that Infinity Ward has formed a new studio - and with Henderson's musings - we're convinced this is more than just some wild speculation.
We haven't even got to the Vanguard release date yet and we're already looking ahead at Call of Duty 2022. Come on guys, give us a break.
