Is Subnautica: Below Zero Free On PS5?
Subnautica: Below Zero has been a long time coming. Ever since the original Subnautica game launched in 2014, it’s garnered an incredibly dedicated fanbase, and one that is dead-set on uncovering every hidden secret the huge game has to offer. And now its sequel, Below Zero, is set to bring even more lore and curiosities to the world of Subnautica. But, one particular detail about the game has been confusing fans.
Subnautica’s ‘Free Upgrade’ Confusion
When the game earned some screen time during one of PlayStation’s State of Play conferences, there was a lot of immediate hype and a lot of confusion. After showing off some of the game’s new features and detailing the game’s 4K and 60fps capabilities on the PS5, the voiceover mentions a specific detail that caught fans’ attention. “And, if you already own a physical or digital version of the first Subnautica on PS4”, it says, “you’ll be able to upgrade to the digital PS5 version at no additional cost”.
This has fans confused - in context with the conversations about Subnautica’s sequel, it makes it seem as though if you own the original game, you’ll get Below Zero for free. But, this may not actually be the case.
Is Subnautica: Below Zero Free On PS5?
It looks like the code’s been cracked. As it turns out, if you own the original Subnautica game, in physical or digital form on PS4, you’ll be able to upgrade to the Subnautica PS5 version, with amped-up visuals and refresh rates. The same can also be said of Subnautica: Below Zero - if you pick up a copy of the game to play on PS4, you’ll be able to upgrade to the PS5 version at no extra cost.
Click to enlargeIt’s worth pointing out, as it caused a lot of confusion initially, that buying a copy of Subnautica doesn’t make you eligible for a free copy of Subnautica: Below Zero. It seemed like a deal too good to be true, and well, it is, after all.
But, the potentially massive game is only £29.99 on the PlayStation Store, and some physical copies are available for £24.99, so at least it won’t carve a massive hole out of your pockets.
Whether we’re getting free copies of the game or not, Subnautica: Below Zero is set to make quite the splash when it releases this week, and we can’t wait to return to planet 4546b.
