The claws are out, as Insomniac Games continues its domination of the superhero video game market with a Wolverine standalone. The metallic menace is no stranger to video games, but yet again, he'll get to flex his muscles on his own. The question is, will he really be all alone out there?

One of the biggest talking points of September's PlayStation 5 showcase was the surprise reveal of a video game based on the clawed Canadian. Insomniac has already had unprecedented success with Marvel's Spider-Man and the Miles Morales spin-off, however, that's nothing compared to the potential of Wolverine popping out his signature blades.

Will the Incredible Hulk be in Wolverine?

The first teaser didn't give us much to go on. Apart from conjuring memories of 2000's X-Men with Wolverine drowning his sorrows in a bar, the scene showed bloodied men who'd been downed by the leading Logan. The clip ended with a quick flash of his claws - confirming Wolverine is in active development.

Away from the obvious, fans picked up on a sneaky Easter egg that could hint at the imminent arrival of the Incredible Hulk. As noted by eagle-eyed gamers, there's a license plate that seems like a more than subtle nod to Wolverine's first comic book appearance in 1974's The Incredible Hulk #180.

Then again, the fact this is a Wolverine game would suggest it'll be more of an X-Men story. Wolverine has even risen to the rank of being Avenger over the years, but let's remember, he's best-known as a member of the X-Men. Famous villains like Sabretooth and Juggernaut are likely foes, while we're fully expecting a last-minute cameo from Professor X to set up a possible sequel.

How could Hulk fit into Wolverine?

While the comics have featured plenty of battles between Wolverine and other enemies (namely Punisher), his fights with Hulk have been some of the most iconic. Memorably, the Old Man Logan arc saw Wolvie burst out from the chest of an enraged Hulk. Ah, good times.

Elsewhere, Wolverine also starred in the Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk miniseries from the '00s. Even though we obviously don't expect Insomniac's game to play out with Wolverine slashing his way out of Hulk's chest, Hulk could be (literally) a massive presence in this story.

It's unclear whether Wolverine will fit into the same universe as Marvel's Spider-Man, but you might recall the Avengers Tower featured in 2018's first game. Despite Insomniac cleverly darting around the issue of where Earth's Mightiest Heroes were, we know some sort of team is out there somewhere. Using Hulk to bridge the gap between these two worlds would cleverly help the developer build its own gaming universe.

With Wolverine still likely to be a long way off, gamers will have to sit tight and wait for Insomniac to reveal more details. In the meantime, it's back to trawling the internet for whispers of who Wolverine will be locking claws with and whether the Incredible Hulk will be saved for an almighty boss battle. We can but hope.
