We might be revving our engines in anticipation of the upcoming GTA Trilogy, but if you're on Nintendo Switch, you might want to pump the brakes first. With the Grand Theft Auto franchise bigger than ever, the humble roots of 1997's OG are a distant memory.

Although things look a little different in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, the core of these classic titles remains much the same. While we shouldn't expect new-gen graphics and ray tracing, the beloved '00s games of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas have been given some much-needed love.

Why Is The GTA Trilogy Switch Port Disappointing Fans?

There's great new that a GTA Trilogy Switch port is on the way, meaning that for once, Nintendo lovers won't be locked out of the fun. Sadly, swapping the Mushroom Kingdom for this fictionalised version of the USA might not be all it's cracked up to be.

Gamers have already grumbled that The Definitive Edition is packing a new-gen price tag, but if you're buying on Switch, you'll also have a hefty download to content with. Yes, even the physical version of the GTA Trilogy will require you to clear out your gaming closet.

According to VGC, the box art for the trilogy confirms a download is still needed - even though you have a physical copy. Pre-orders are currently live on Target, with the box art containing a small message at the bottom that reads, "Download required – see back". The site goes on to report that the Switch eShop lists the entire trilogy as taking 22GB to download digitally - meaning it should've easily fit in a 32GB cartridge.

Why Does The GTA Trilogy Require A Download?

The cause of the trouble is reportedly all down to Vice City. Some of us are buying The Definitive Edition just for the fan-favourite 2002 game or to see what a thicc Tommy Vercetti looks like. VGC continues to explain that the eShop version lists each game a separate entity that can't be bought on their own.

Individual eShop pages list Grand Theft Auto III at 2.2GB, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas at 10.8GB, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City at just 119MB. Weirdly, the Vice City page has a message that says, "The estimated system space that will be required to download this game is 6.5GB". The other two games don't have an additional message.

It's unclear why there's a problem with Vice City and it's been singled out, but VGC suspects it could be a difficulty with the soundtrack and licensed music with the pastel-clad 80's adventure. Still, are you really going to let a download stop you playing a franchise we've been begging to come to Switch? It could be time to clear out some space. Come on, are you really playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons any more anyway?
