Sony Shows Off God Of War PS5 Patch
How do you make one of the best modern video games of all time even better? Well, when it comes to Sony Santa Monica's God of War, you give the record-breaking trip into Norse mythology a fresh lick of paint, some 4K capabilities, and get Kratos to swing his Leviathan Axe onto the PlayStation 5. Rumours that a God of War PS5 patch was on the way seemed like the legends of Odin and Loki themselves, however, with our patience paying off, the game of a generation is about to come roaring into next-gen in a big way.
For those who couldn't wait to part with their cash and get their gaming mitts on a PS5, the souped-up console has already shown off an impressive library of new games. As well as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the Demon's Souls remake, there's the God of War-esque Assassin's Creed Valhalla - which became one of 2020's best-selling games. 2021 is set to be another bumper year thanks to the release of PlayStation exclusives like Horizon Forbidden West, however, our hopes that the tentatively titled God of War: Ragnarok will arrive are starting to slip. While we wait for an update on where the sequel is up to, at least you can bask in the glory that God of War is getting a major PS5 revamp.
What's included in the God of War PS5 patch?
Sony Santa Monica Studios made the announcement on its developer's blog, confirming the God of War PS5 patch is coming today (February 2). The new graphics mode is designed to "get the most out of the increased performance capabilities of the PlayStation 5". Previously, PlayStation 5 owners were able to use the two graphics modes that came alongside God of War's PlayStation 4 Pro version. The performance-enhanced version unlocked frame rate but restricted resolution to 1908p, while the graphics-enhanced version offered 4K but was locked to 30fps.
Although the PS5 God of War already had a slight boost compared to the PS4 Pro when in Favour Performance Mode, the supercharged Enhanced Performance Experience mode will be enabled by default following the patch. Giving gamers the optimum experience, the Enhanced Performance Experience syncs 60fps at a 4K Checkerboard Resolution of 2160p. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, a God of War: Ragnarok release date. For those who aren't a fan of the upgrade (who are you?), the blog explained, "You can go back to the original PlayStation 4 ‘Favor Resolution’ video graphics mode at any time by selecting Original Performance Experience, which will offer 4K Checkerboard Resolution* synced to 30 FPS".
How can you get the God of War PS5 patch?
Back in 2018, God of War picked up the tattered remains of the once-lauded God of War name and decided to try something completely different. With God of War first coming to the PlayStation in 2005, former Lead Animator Cory Barlog stepped up as Game Director and Story Writer to take Kratos out of the scored realm of Greek gods and monsters, and to the chilly climes of Midgard. Swapping Kratos' signature Blades of Chaos for the Leviathan Axe, the ambitious reimagining also added another layer with the Ghost of Sparta's son accompanying him on the journey.
God of War already looked stunning on PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5, but with SSM putting its efforts into making the PS5 version the jewel in the crown, it's something truly beautiful to behold. God of War follows in the footsteps of Ghost of Tsushima also getting an impressive bump on the PS5. CD Projekt Red is currently hard at work on making the troubled Cyberpunk 2077 ready for next-gen consoles with its own overhaul for later this year, while there are whispers that PlayStation exclusives Death Stranding and The Last of Us Part II could also be getting a boost from next-gen capabilities.
The FREE (we need to emphasise this again) God of War PS5 patch is out today and is available for anyone who has a physical or digital copy of the game, including those who downloaded it as part as the PS5's PlayStation Plus Collection. Well, what are you waiting for? Aren't there some mythical serpents you need to slay?
