They say two swords are better than one - and that's definitely the case when it comes to Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Tsushima. While the PlayStation exclusive only last year, its place in that weird limbo between the PS4 and PS5 means it was always primed for a next-gen upgrade.

Alongside the Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut - that will bring a whole new realm to explore in the form of Iki Island - there are plans to release the game's multiplayer as a Ghost of Tsushima standalone. Even though the Legends multiplayer mode slipped under the radar in October, it's getting its own time to shine in 2021.

Why is Ghost of Tsushima getting a multiplayer standalone?

The standalone Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is coming on September 3. While the original was a free online accompaniment to the main game, Legends will now be pay to play. Don't worry though, you get plenty of bang for your buck thanks to a new Rivals mode.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony explained, "This update brings the launch of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a brand-new co-op multiplayer mode inspired by Japanese mythology, as well as exciting new updates and New Game+ for our single-player campaign!”

In Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, you can swing your samurai sword into action with two-player story missions and four-player survival missions. The blog explained, "After you’ve downloaded version 1.1 of Ghost of Tsushima, you can visit the PlayStation Store from your PS4 to download a free unlock for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, which will allow you to play”. Remember, you'll need to be online and have an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

If you're sold, the PS4 and PS5 versions of Legends will be priced at $20/£16. There's also a chance to upgrade to the Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut for $40/£44 (PS4) or $50/£54 (PS5).

What else is coming to the Ghost of Tsushima multiplayer standalone?

Raids is a big addition to Legends, and if you're wondering what the new mode involves, Sucker Punch Senior Game Designer Darren Bridges has the scoop. On the PS Blog, Bridges hyped Rivals and said, "In Rivals, two teams of two will compete to defeat waves of enemies.

"With each defeated foe, you’ll collect Magatama that you can use to harm the other team. For example, you can spend Magatama on Shades to block your opponents’ purchases, Curses (health drain, exploding bodies, etc), Hwacha fire, and more. Once you’ve spent enough Magatama, you’ll unlock Final Stand waves. Complete these before the opposing team to win!"

If all of the above wasn't enough, the original release of Legends is getting a balance update on August 20 - which just so happens to tie into the release of the Director's Cut. As well as shortening the session length in Survival mode, there's a new Survival Nightmare challenge variant and new cosmetics.

Finally, Legends is adding a Gear Mastery system that lets you pimp your arsenal. Those who've reached 110-level gear can bind it to a class and compete in "Mastery Challenges."

Sucker Punch has promised weekly updates will follow suit from September 10 to October 1. These will add new maps and introduce a more challenging version of last year's raid. Either way, Ghost of Tsushima is set to slice and dice the competition into 2021 and beyond.
