GameStop Accidentally Giving Away Assassin's Creed For Free
They say nothing good comes for free, but that's not necessarily the case if you've visited GameStop recently. After making all that money in the stock market scandal of February, it looks like the store is (quite literally) giving away games for free.
Even though the internet is currently awash with gaming deals thanks to Amazon's Prime Day, other big retailers want to get you parting with your cash. Gamers were happy to learn GameStop was giving away the remastered Assassin's Creed 3 for absolutely nothing. Although the company was quick to find out the mistake, it was too little, too late.
Why did GameStop give away Assassin's Creed for free?
Taking place during the American Revolution and ditching fan-favourite Ezio in favour of Connor, AC3 is now held as a beloved entry in the franchise. With a remastered version revamping the 9-year-old game, it's no surprise it's a popular choice for players.
In the early hours of the morning, Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered was available for nothing. It's thought the accidental deal made the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions free - you only had to pay for shipping.
Multiple accounts on Twitter report being able to add Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered to their carts, only to have the title discounted by its asking price. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, news of the glitch soon spread and plenty of you took advantage of the snatching the 2019 game for free.
What's next for Assassin's Creed?
A lot has changed with Assassin's Creed since the release of AC3 in 2012. While the game was praised for its bold reinvention of what we thought we knew, the franchise has continued to evolve since then. Only last year, Assassin's Creed Valhalla introduced another Assassin to the fold in the form of Eivor the Viking.
Even though we've come a long way from Connor's introduction, AC3 marked a turning point for the series that can be traced all the way to Valhalla. Of course, we don't know what's next for Assassin's Creed. Following the Valhalla DLCs "Wrath of the Druids" and "Siege of Paris", there are reports of a third DLC. This would line up with ideas there won't be a new game until 2022.
With Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered offering a new graphics engine, high-resolution textures, as well as 4K and HDR on PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X, and Windows PC, nabbing it for nothing was definitely a bargain we weren't expecting.
