Fortnites list of collaborations is endless. We’ve seen Fortnite X Marvel, Fortnite X Travis Scott, Fortnite X Halo, and much, much more. Outside of pop culture, Fortnite is no stranger to collabs with the sporting world. Fortnite X National Football League (NFL) has been a thing, along with multiple football collaborations, including Fortnite X Neymar Jr.

With all this, there’s yet to be a real basketball collaboration. However, that will end soon, as the Fortnite X NBA Community Battles event is on its way. Fortnite is partnering with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to release a special Community Battles event. Players can support their favourite team in a competition to earn free V-Bucks.

As of now, Epic Games has kept this event under wraps. But details of the Fortnite X NBA Community Battles have started to leak. Find out what’s to come as we run you through the event as well as how to ensure you come away with some free V-Bucks.

Fortnite X NBA Community Battles Overview

While Fortnite X NBA Community Battles has yet to be officially confirmed by Epic Games, reputable leakers such as iFireMonkey have already uncovered the details of this upcoming event.

Fortnite players will be able to back one of the 30 NBA teams. Once a player has chosen a team, they will be assigned Daily Tasks and Ongoing Tasks to complete. Daily Tasks will work similarly to Daily Challenges. Ongoing Tasks will consist of mini-challenges such as “Earn Ten Eliminations” and “Place Top Ten”. The main difference is that Ongoing Tasks will be repeatable.

Completing these tasks will earn points for your chosen team and move them up the leaderboard. After four days, members of the winning teams will receive free V-Bucks and other rewards based on their final placement.

Below is a condensed run-down of the upcoming event:

  • The event will operate from May 12 to May 16
  • Players need to go online and sign-up on a special website. Here, players will choose one team to support
  • Players can sign-up beginning on May 10
  • Tasks will become available on May 12
  • A total of one million users can register on the website

Take note of the one million user maximum. Fortnite’s playerbase is massive and everyone will jump at the opportunity to earn free V-Bucks. Make sure to go online and sign-up for the event ASAP following Epic’s official announcement on May 10.

Which NBA Team Should I Back?

As you can now tell, choosing the right team to back will be important. Sure, it’s tempting to go with the hometown hero or your personal favourite team, but if you really want those free V-Bucks, you need to choose your team carefully. Luckily, a few select teams are all but guaranteed to place in the top three.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are all but assured to come first in the Fortnite X NBA Community Battles event. The Lakers are among the most valuable franchises in the NBA and come with a rich history of success. Many all-time greats played for the Lakers organisation, including Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O’Neal, and the late Kobe Bryant. Currently, the Lakers are led by Lebron James and Anthony Davis.

The Los Angeles Lakers are not just popular in the NBA; they are one of the most popular sports franchises across all of sports. The Lakers have worldwide fandom — any other team placing first would be a huge upset.

Golden State Warriors

If any team has a chance to upset the Lakers, it would be the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors are coming off of a legendary dynasty-like run that saw them reach the NBA Finals five years in a row and walk away with three championships. This was largely thanks to Stephen Curry, one of the most popular basketball players in the world - especially among the younger fanbase. We could see the Warriors making a run at the top spot in the Fortnite X NBA Community Battles.

Brooklyn Nets

Our last projected winner is the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are currently the powerhouse of the NBA, boasting a team consisting of all-stars such as Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving. This is one of the most stacked rosters the NBA has ever seen. Additionally, the Nets are based in New York, a hub for basketball fandom.

The Nets loaded roster and their likelihood of winning this year’s NBA Championship could thrust them to the top of the Fortnite X NBA Community Battles standings.

Fortnite NBA Lebron James

The Fortnite X NBA Community Battles event is set up in a way that it will function as a sort of popularity contest. The team that has the most members backing it will come out on top. With that in mind, the three teams above are likely to earn the most support. Everyone wants free V-Bucks and free rewards, so others will jump on the bandwagon as well.

Players interested purely in the rewards should probably choose to back the Lakers, Warriors, or Nets. However, choosing your personal favourite team regardless of their overall popularity would be an honourable decision.
