Look to the skies in Fortnite because there's a new feature set to soar down over the map. While rumours of a Red Dead Redemption-inspired game with mountable animals have been doing the rounds for ages, the latest update hints that flying beasts will also be part of an evolved Fortnite.

The introduction of animals in Chapter 2 Season 6's Primal season brought chickens, boars, wolves, and eventually velociraptors to the game. There was nothing quite like being hunted by a pack of "clever girls", only to tame them and have a ferocious carnivore on your side. However, that's nothing compared to the idea of being able to ride your animals into battle.

What mountable flying wildlife is coming to Fortnite?

According to trusted Fortnite fanatic HYPEX, mountable flying wildlife is on the way soon. The leaker posted on Twitter to discuss a new type of wildlife known as "Avian". HYPEX reiterated that this is just the codename for the winged beast and not the final name. In terms of what it will be, we have no idea, but are imagining some Avatar-inspired beast.

Importantly, there's no news on when mountable flying wildlife will be coming to Fortnite. Whether it's before the end of Season 7 or will help usher in Season 8 (whatever it is), expect big changes. If this had been Chapter 2 Season 6, it's easy to picture pterodactyls, but given the fact we're in an alien-themed season, it could be some sort of extra-terrestrial.

The Twitterverse exploded with ideas of what could be on the way. As well as someone joking it could be Rick and Morty's Birdperson, another added, "I hope it's a dragon, preferably three-headed". Someone else said, "Maybe a bird? Or bat? Trying to imagine what it could be... maybe the parasites will evolve into flying creatures with actual wings etc, that would be kinda cool...", while a third concluded, "Flying alligator fortnite do it".

When will moutable flying wildlife come to Fortnite?

There was a previous leak that mentioned "ridable monsters/mecs will come to the island at some point (probably not this season)". Elsewhere, there are continued talks about Ariana Grande coming as a skin alongside her own live concert, and a possible inclusion of the Batman Who Laughs to tie into the Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point crossover.

Everything points toward a potential Season 8 introduction. Although vehicles are pretty limited right now, Season 7 has flying saucers for mobility, so it doesn't make sense to add mountable flying wildlife to Fortnite.

We don't know what's on the way with Season 8, but considering we had the floods of Season 3, Marvel Madness of Season 4, crossover chaos with the hunters of Season 5, dino-mite idea of Season 6, and alien invasions of Season 7, your guess is as good as ours.

It's true that we have had flying animals before with parrots and bats, while chickens have been able to glide, and parasites technically fly. However, the idea of turning the map into its very own Pandora and letting us soar above enemies on winged monsters would be a break from the norm.

As with all things Fortnite, we'll have to wait and see if mountable flying wildlife are an upcoming addition or are lost forever like those mythical kangaroos.
