The Final Fantasy series has been going strong for as long as many gamers can remember. Final Fantasy 7 obliterated expectations upon launch in the US and Europe and became a cultural phenomenon, and since, the series has maintained a cult following and has justified every installation in the franchise so far.

The most recent mainline title, Final Fantasy XV, brought a whole swathe of new fans to the game, allowing players to road trip across the land of Eos with their emo bezzies by their side.

And now, the director of the popular JRPG has potentially bigger things planned.

In a recent interview with Famitsu (via ryokutya2089), Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata confirmed that he was once again working on new projects - and it looks like they could be pretty big ones too. Though the interview is yet to be professionally translated, Tabata mentions a few elements of both of these games that are incredibly exciting. The first game is now through pre-production and is described as a “High-speed RPG” that is described as “experimental”. The game is suggested to be quite a short game and “tightly condensed”, but it’s worth multiple playthroughs.

The second game is a “worldwide AAA game”, and is described as a “nomadic RPG” that uses “free wandering”, so it’s safe to assume the title will take some notes from the production of Final Fantasy XV for a pretty massive RPG experience. It should have a bit of that XV flair, as the game is described as an “evolved version” of the title.

However the games turn out in terms of build, Tabata has assured us that “both are masterpieces” regardless. Blimey.

The games sound pretty massive, and we’re excited to see what Tabata is up to next. And if they’re anything like Final Fantasy XV, we’re absolutely on board.
