FIFA fans up and down the globe have been flip-flapped by EA who have released the FIFA 21 PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S free upgrades. Players who have the game downloaded on the current generation consoles can now upgrade the game for free onto their next-gen consoles.

The news comes 24 hours before FIFA 21 goes on general sale for the next-gen consoles, presumably to avoid a mass queue and server overload on December 4.

Players making the upgrade will be able to carry across their Ultimate Team progression, meaning all of their coins, players, consumables, and FIFA points will be intact when they make the switch. Unfortunately, players with extensive Career Modes will be left unhappy, as the developers have decided to not make the progress transferable. So, if you're mid-way through a Champions League run with Salford City you may want to come to a natural stop before making the switch.

Your VOLTA progression will also carry over, as the only mode apart from Ultimate Team to have this luxury. Players' stats on Pro Clubs, Online and Co-Op Season will join Career Mode in the discarded pile.

To make the upgrade to the next-gen consoles you will first have to jump onto your PS5 or Xbox Series X or S with the online account associated that is linked to your FIFA 21 progress. This will then link your EA Origin account to the new console too. By heading over to your game library, an option should appear for the free PS5/Xbox Series X/S upgrade. You will have to select "Buy This" which will be free, and start your download the next-gen version. Once you log on you will have your VOLTA and Ultimate Team ready to continue.

Happy next-gen rainbow flicking, FIFA fans.
