Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Teased For Standalone Release

The wild world of Far Cry could be about to rerelease its wackiest entry, with rumours that the underrated Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will get a standalone release some eight years after it first blasted its way into our lives with a neon cannon.
For 17 years, the main Far Cry series has stuck with the same formula of a generic hero trying to save a lawless frontier from some unhinged madman. However, Ubisoft's long-running franchise has also excelled at bringing the unusual with the likes of Primal's trip to the prehistoric and Far Cry New Dawn's visit to a nuclear-ravaged Earth. Still, all of this pales in comparison to Sergeant Rex "Power" Colt's journey in Blood Dragon.
Will Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon get a standalone release?
For those who've never played Blood Dragon, firstly, where have you been? Dropping Colt into a dystopian version of 2007, this cyberpunk adventure was an eight-hour add-on to Far Cry 3 that had nothing to do with the main game.
Blood Dragon was pure and unadulterated '80s homages, that even included '80s star Michael Biehn as Colt. From a VHS tracking screen to an electro soundtrack, Blood Dragon oozed the decade of big hair and leg warmers. Following the recent weekend where Far Cry 5 went free-to-play, Ubisoft could have another surprise up its sleeve.
The latest announcement comes from an Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) listing that mentions Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition. We already knew Blood Dragon would be part of the Far Cry 6 Season Pass thanks to June's Ubisoft Forward showcase, however, it now looks like it will be available elsewhere.
Blood Dragon Classic Edition has been given an M for Mature rating, and as well mentioning screams of pain and enemies emitting a bright blue liquid when hit, we're warned about a cutscene that features "a brief sex act—sexual" where "moaning sounds/dialogue is heard; bare buttocks and breasts are briefly depicted". Elsewhere, the words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard throughout.
What else do we know about Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon's standalone release?
Remembering how Far Cry 3: Classic launched alongside Far Cry 5 in 2018, we're hopeful Blood Dragon will get its standalone release when Far Cry 6 releases on October 7. Importantly, the listing is for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series - which is exactly where Far Cry 6 is being released.
It's interesting that Blood Dragon is getting a lot of attention at the moment. While this was once a forgotten tagalong to a main entry Far Cry game, it's become a cult classic. Only recently, Netflix announced an anime version of Blood Dragon that will arrive on the streaming service in the near future.
As things gallop toward the much-hyped release of Far Cry 6, it's reassuring that Ubisoft is investing in an expanded Far Cry world. Well, with it being one of the publisher's big money-spinners, it's no surprise we won't just be confined to the island of Yara.
