Ubisoft hasn't even rolled out the welcome wagon for Far Cry 6 yet, but that hasn't stopped eager gamers asking what's next for the long-running shooter series. Like the changing of the tide, we're pretty much guaranteed there's another Far Cry on the way.

We're off somewhere new in Far Cry 6, with the war-torn island of Yara in our crosshairs. This time, you take on the role of a guerilla fighter called Dani Rojas - who attempts to topple the villainous El Presidente.

Like with any Far Cry game, there's been a bold reinvention, however, that's nothing compared to what Far Cry 7 could have in store.

What's the Far Cry 7 rumour?

According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Far Cry 7 will be an even bigger departure from what we've come to know. What, even more out there than Far Cry Primal's caveman themes? Speaking to the Triple Click Podcast, Schreier simply said, "From what I have heard, if I remember correctly, they're aiming to go in a radically different direction for Far Cry after [Far Cry 6]".

Unfortunately, Schreier doesn't offer up any further details on what that means. Since Far Cry 3, there's been a pretty common theme of a heroic protagonist going up against a lead antagonist in some sort of dystopian setting. Although we imagine that will stick moving forward, it'll be interesting to see where we're going next.

Looking back at the acclaimed legacy of Far Cry, we've had some clever deviations from the norm. Alongside the previously mentioned Primal, there was the out-there concept of Far Cry: New Dawn charting the nuclear apocalypse, and Far Cry: Blood Dragon living our cyberpunk fantasies. Considering Blood Dragon is getting its own Netflix anime and a revamped port inside Far Cry 6, could Far Cry 7 be revisiting this neon-splashed future?

When will Far Cry 7 be released?

Asking when Far Cry 7 will be released seems a bit redundant considering we STILL haven't got to fully sit down with Far Cry 6. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic scuppered plans for a February release, with the open-world spectacular now due to land on October 7. However, just like Resident Evil fans have been demanding to know more about Resident Evil 9, there are those already speculating about a Far Cry 7 release date.

Looking back at the release schedule of Far Cry games, main series entries have largely released like clockwork every two to three years. That doesn't take into account spin-offs peppered in between, but let's remember Far Cry 6 is expected to have a tonne of DLC content. Added to this, will there be a Yara spin-off in the vein of New Dawn?

Far Cry 7 may be a long way off for now, but with Schreier offering up the first hints of what's to come, expect the seventh main entry to step out of Far Cry 6's shadow in the not-so-distant future. Either way, we're excited to see what Ubisoft is cooking up in the kitchen.
