Microsoft Appears To Leak Far Cry 6
With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X officially off the shelves and in our homes (if you managed to nab one), gamers around the globe are looking at which games will define the next generation of consoles. Next-gen games have only been out for a matter of weeks and we're already caught up in the battle of the titles between the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Before the year's out we've got Cyberpunk 2077, while 2021 holds the game's next-gen release alongside Resident Evil Village, Gotham Knights, and God of War: Ragnarok's hopeful drop. Trying to hold its own alongside the best of the rest is Far Cry 6. Ubisoft is already having a great 2020 with Valhalla, and if the hype is anything to go by, Far Cry 6 should make sure 2021 is another bumper year. Still, fans are demanding to know just exactly when they'll be able to get to grips with Far Cry 6.
Far Cry 6 release: When is it?
Update: The Far Cry 6 release date was October 7, 2021
Ubisoft Toronto had already pencilled Fary Cry 6 in for a February 18, 2021, release. However, "due to production challenges related to work from home" thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the game was pushed to a later date alongside Rainbow Six Quarantine. We knew Far Cry 6 would come at some point after the financial year starts on April 1, and if the latest leaks are to be believed, it won't be too long after.
At the time of writing, a quick look at the official Microsoft Store page for Far Cry 6 lists it for a May 26 release. You can also place a pre-order for the game, meaning we're that little bit closer to seeing what Ubisoft has been working on. When it comes to the validity of the claim, at least it's not some sketchy ResetEra thread. The Microsoft Store is usually on the money and accurately leaked release dates for Star Wars: Squadrons, Mafia Trilogy and Crysis Remastered. If the Far Cry 6 leak is legit, the site could become our go-to place to find out release dates.
Far Cry 6 release: what's the game about?
If there's one thing Far Cry is good at, it's reinventing itself. The sixth entry in the main franchise will give us a blast from the past as we head to the disrupted island of Yara. Here, the villainous "El Presidente" - played by Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito - rules with an iron fist. Players are tasked with taking on the role of guerilla fighter called Dani Rojas, who is trying to topple this dictatorship and indulge in a bit of sweet revenge along the way.
As with most modern AAA games, you can pick Dani's gender at the start. Development on Far Cry 6 had been going for at least four years when the game was officially announced this year, which makes sense considering it's described as having "the largest Far Cry playground to date". Ubisoft Chief Financial Officer Frédérick Duguet said he wanted all delayed game out by the end of September 2021, so if this potential release is correct, developers are well within that window.
Most of us are already bashing our buttons in excitement to see what's different about Fary Cry 6, while still keeping the core of what's made the shooter such a fan favourite since the first game came out all the way back in 2004. All we need now is for Ubisoft to give the Microsoft leak the nod and we can finally circle the big day in our diaries. Still, we're still "far" away from Far Cry 6.
