Far Cry 6 Is Encouraging Players To Put Down Their Guns And Explore

While the aim of Ubisoft's Far Cry 6 is to topple the villainous Anton "El Presidente" Castillo, the long-running franchise wants players to try a different way of restoring peace to the island of Yara. Although it looks all-too-tempting to barrel in all guns blazing - with your jetpack and rocket-launching "Supremo" backpacks - developers have put an emphasis on stealth elements of the open-world shooter to make sure you get to see Yara in all its beauty.

With Far Cry 6 being delayed from its original release date of February, it's only added to the hype of the "biggest" Far Cry game yet. The first gameplay reveal didn't disappoint, as players got up close and personal with El Presidente's men and the war-torn chaos of Yara. Aside from the debut of the adorable Chorizo the dachshund, another key takeaway was the wide variety of weaponry. Taking out enemies using a gun that launched CD copies of "Macarena" was a highlight, however, Ubisoft also wants you to throw down your guns in Far Cry 6

Why should you put down your guns in Far Cry 6?

Discussing why should down arms and take the peaceful route around Yara, Lead Gameplay Designer David Grivel explained (via GamesRadar), "We are trying to embrace this feeling that you are a modern guerrilla fighter. One of the things that guerrillas do in the real world is blend in with civilians; you don't know who they are or where they are, and that's exactly what we wanted to emulate. Now you can put your gun away".

While stealth games like Metal Gear have become increasingly popular over the years, other titles like Alien: Isolation and even the Castle Dimitrescu elements of Resident Evil Village have forced you to find more ingenious ways to outmanoeuvre enemies. Continuing about why it's better to take the scenic route, Grivel added, "It means that, as long as you don't do anything crazy, no one will bother you. If you just want to go fishing or play dominos then you can do that, and you will be fine. What this gives you is the agency to start combat when you want to, not when the game wants to".

What guns are there in Far Cry 6?

It's important to note Grivel isn't saying you can complete Far Cry 6 as a pacifist. We don't imagine the final battle will simply be Dani talking El Presidente into stepping down and then escorting him to jail. Added to this, it's clear devs have put a lot of work into weapons. From the brief snippets we've seen, Far Cry 6 has one of the most imaginative crafting systems to date. Similar to the dystopian Fallout 4, making weapons out of old scrap is key to survival.

At one point in the gameplay reveal, the ex-KGB spy Juan Cortez tells players, "That means absolutely everything from sardine cans…goddamn batteries…to old motorcycle engines have been built into equipment or some very unique deadly weapons…". The aforementioned Macerena gun is sure to be a hit, but we suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the weapons masters have been cooking up behind the scenes. Let's remember that Far Cry 6 is still billed as a shooter. Ubisoft might want you to take a scenic tour of Yara to take in this immersive backdrop, but at the end of the day, it won't be long until the bullets are flying.
