There could be trouble ahead for Far Cry 6, with Ubisoft's already delayed game facing an uncertain future following the departure of one of its developers. 2021 already has a packed gaming slate that will include the likes of Horizon Forbidden WestGotham KnightsHalo InfiniteResident Evil Village, and (hopefully) God of War: Ragnarok. Some 17 years after we first dived into Far Cry, Ubisoft hopes to usher in a new generation of the first-person shooter series.

As the first game since 2018's Far Cry 5 and narrative sequel (New Dawn) in 2019, we're getting a blast from the past with a more typically Far Cry game. Here, the story focuses on a guerilla fighter called Dani Rojas, who sets out on a mission of vengeance to rid the troubled island of Yara from the tyrannical "El Presidente" Antón Castillo. Alongside the fact this is the first next-gen Far Cry, there are swirling rumours we could see the origin of Far Cry 3's iconic Vaas. It's all hearsay for now, but either way, we can't wait to play Far Cry 6

Should we be worried about Far Cry 6?

With the game being delayed from its proposed release of February 18 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it's left Far Cry 6 in gaming limbo. The company's quarterly calls last month promised a release before September 2021, but with the world on its head, who knows what the future holds? Now, the departure of Senior Game Designer Marc McGinley has us worried. Posting on Twitter, McGinley has confirmed he'd be leaving Ubisoft after several years with the company.

McGinley said he'd miss working with his colleagues on Far Cry 6, which again raises questions about what's going on with the troubled title. There are two ways to look at McGinley's departure. While it might seem worrying to lose a senior member of the team at such a late stage in development, it's also possible McGinley has left the company after completing all the work he needed to on Far Cry 6. Looking at a similar situation, remember when Halo Infinite lost a number of high-profile directors and the game was thrown into turmoil. The departure of a Senior Game Designer isn't quite on that level, but still, fans are demanding to know more.

What's next for Far Cry 6?

On the plus side, we know Far Cry 6 will be the biggest yet and feature a vast open world. The series is no stranger to tropical paradises, and while we've only just scratched the surface of Yara, it looks like there will be a sprawling backdrop to explore. We haven't seen any gameplay yet, which has also made players anxious that Far Cry 6 isn't moving at the rate we'd hoped for. Still, the idea of "Fangs for Hire" letting you recruit wild animals to fight by your side sounds like an interesting concept.

As for McGinley, he said he's going to enjoy a week off before letting us know what's next. It's also important to note he seemingly joined Ubisoft specifically to work on Far Cry 6, with development reportedly starting in 2017 before Far Cry 5 had even released. Either way, it doesn't sound like he's about to leave the gaming industry. With the release of Far Cry 6 hopefully just around the corner, we should know more in the near future. Even with McGinley leaving Ubisoft, here's hoping Far Cry will come out all guns blazing and can live up to the hype of being one of 2021's most-anticipated games.
