Far Cry 2 Remake Hinted At After 'Leaked Map' Appears
Is this time of remakes, remasterings, and reboots, is Far Cry 2 the latest video game giant to get a fresh lick of paint for next-gen consoles? Ubisoft's long-running franchise is largely praised with having Far Cry 3 as the jewel in its crown, however, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of love for Far Cry 2. The 2008 title took the seeds of the original game and ran with them for a game that bore almost no similarities to its predecessor.
We've had Far Cry remakes before with the underwhelming Far Cry: Instincts, but in a similar vein to how Capcom is powering ahead with its Resident Evil remakes, Ubisoft would be onto a winner if it applied the same formula to Far Cry.
What is the Far Cry 2 remake leak?
The last Ubisoft leak included a Far Cry 2 map image. Possible remake/remaster? from r/GamingLeaksAndRumours
Over on Reddit, u/Greenhouse95 shared images of an apparently remastered map of Far Cry 2's failed African state. The thread explained, "I got the Ubisoft leak and found that this image [below] was in there. After searching for a long time for it on the Internet I couldn't find it. Could that mean that they are or were planning on doing a remaster of Far Cry 2?" It's far from a confirmation, and let's remember a recent leak of a Grand Theft Auto 6 map was debunked.
With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ushering in a new era of games, it's obviously led to questions about what legacy titles are worth revisiting for next-gen. When it comes to Far Cry 2, most agreed this "leak" is probably false, however, it didn't stop the idea causing quite a stir.
One fan wrote, "I'm not gonna get my hopes up, but damn if Far Cry 2 still isn't my favourite. I don't even want them to change much about it. Just make the gunplay feel a bit more modern and update the graphics". Another added, "All that game needs is overhauled graphics and some Quality of life fixes. Maybe some tweaks to the gunplay and melee. Other than that it should largely be left alone if a remaster is in the works".
Where is Far Cry up to?
It's a nice idea that a Far Cry 2 remake could be on the way, but let's remember Ubisoft will be channelling all its efforts into Far Cry 6. The upcoming next-gen title looks like it will be the biggest yet as we head back in time for a trip to the fictional Caribbean island of Yara. Here, the warring lands are ruled by "El Presidente" Antรณn Castillo (played by Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito).
Some suggested a Far Cry 2 remake could be bundled in with Far Cry 6 - similar to what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed 3 in Assassin's Creed Odyssey - but it's a bit of a stretch, to say the least.
Just like Capcom has seemingly paused work on Resident Evil remakes to make room for the upcoming Resident Evil Village, don't expect any news on a potential Far Cry 2 remake to come out until Far Cry 6 has found its stride. The latest reports are that Ubisoft will be pushing Far Cry 2 into its 2021/2022 fiscal year thanks to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sadly, it sounds like we're a "far cry" away from a Far Cry 2 remake.
