Fans React To Fortnite’s Martin Luther King Jr Event
Fortnite has been going big on its events. The recent Rift Tour featuring Ariana Grande was a huge hit, not only bringing in a new audience to the game, but impressing everyone who was already attached. It was inspired in part by the massive success of Travis Scott’s in-game concert, which took fans and players alike completely by surprise with its over-the-top and impressive visuals.
And now, Fortnite is trying something different with a new in-game event, and are taking a much more serious approach.
Fortnite Announce March Through Time Event
The PlayStation blog has announced the new March Through Time event coming to Fortnite, supported by Time magazine. The event features a re-imagined Washington DC as part of a digital museum to celebrate the life and work of Dr Martin Luther King.
The museum features a series of points of interest that relate to Dr King’s fight for justice, and there are a few quests that, according to the PlayStation website, “should bring an important reminder that relates to Dr King’s speech: We move forward when we work together.”
Completing these challenges offers players a D.C. 63 spray for completing the challenges, too.
It’s a well-intentioned event, but Fortnite failed to consider that the general populace of players isn’t exactly going to take the event as seriously as the team might have hoped. And they’re reacting with about as much seriousness as you’d expect.
The Internet Reacts To Fortnite’s MLK Event
As you can imagine, the internet has reacted to the news of a new event celebrating Dr Martin Luther King with the utmost seriousness. Almost as serious, in fact, as Master Chief doing the Gangnam Style dance on his approach to the Washington Steps.
Fans are recognising that the inherent silliness of Fortnite doesn’t exactly match up with the urgency of Dr King’s fight for racial equality, and are confused by the thought of the crossover.
It’s clear what Fortnite and Time were trying to do, and we applaud their efforts - but maybe asking for respect from the default-dancing masses might have been wishful thinking.
