Fans Hate That Avengers Team Is Making Perfect Dark Reboot
Oh, it was all going so well. In today's female-first world of gaming, the idea of bringing back Perfect Dark seemed like such a well-timed brainwave. It's been a full 11 years since we last saw the sharp-shooting agent tried to save a dystopian future, and even then, it was a remaster of the original for Xbox.
Remembering the last new entry was Perfect Dark Zero in 2005, it's been a long time since we've seen what Rare can bring to the table in terms of Joanna Dark's story. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has already said he's "all in" on the new game, however, news of a new developer joining the team has divided fandom
Who just joined the Perfect Dark reboot?
While Crystal Dynamics was once remembered for 2013's fan-favourite reboot of the Tomb Raider series, it's since been lambasted as the developer behind last year's disappointing Marvel's Avengers. Although Crystal Dynamics is doing its best to turn fan criticisms around with the likes of the "War for Wakanda" DLC, the base game was slammed for being a poor imitation of Insomniac's Spider-Man.
When Crystal Dynamics was announced as new talent joining lead developer The Initiative on the Perfect Dark team, the good news was buried under a sea of negativity. As well as critics calling this "the end" of Perfect Dark thanks to the lukewarm reception for Marvel's Avengers, others called out The Initiative's previous claims it's becoming a AAAA studio.
One negative Nelly wrote, "Lmao, hard fail. Crystal Dynamics made a sh*t Avengers game. What do you need the help of a mid level AAA dev to develop a game when you are a 'AAAA' studio?"
Another added, "Perfect Dark is looking a bit spooky now, why did they even announce it in the first place? AAAA Studio and they need help from the studio that did Avengers aka 'Live service nonsense' Yeah that's a little worrying." A third concluded, "Game will come out in 2025 with a juicy 69 meta and littered with microtransactions."
What does this mean for Perfect Dark and The Avengers?
For those that actually like Marvel's Avengers (we know you're out there), they think Crystal Dynamics will shift focus to Perfect Dark and hang the superhero ensemble out to dry. Namely, most were asking whether we're still getting that much-hyped Spider-Man DLC we've all been waiting for.
We should remember that the partnership makes a lot of sense, especially considering The Initiative Studio Head Darrell Gallagher was previously the Head of Crystal Dynamics. Added to this, he was on board for 2013's beloved Tomb Raider. The critics were always going to find fault with another developer joining an already packed Perfect Dark office, but let's count how many different studios gave Naughty Dog a hand on The Last of Us Part II.
Whether you love the idea of the Tomb Raider team helping Ms. Dark return to her former, or whether you can't get the smell of Marvel's Avengers off your clothes, rest assured that Perfect Dark is going to be one of the most divisive Xbox exclusives in this generation of games.
