Everything You Need To Know About Rocket League Free To Play
Five hugely successful years have passed, and Rocket League is in the healthiest position it ever has been. With Epic Games taking over, the Rocket League Championships in full flow, and the game set to become the first-ever esport to feature at the Olympic Games in 2021, Rocket League is opening its bonnet to a huge mainstream audience by going free to play. As the transition comes in, here's everything you need to know.
When Is Rocket League Free To Play?
Epic Games and Psyonix announced that Rocket League will go free to play on September 23. Despite saying that it will be in "Summer 2020", they have opted to pick the first day of autumn for the launch, but who's here to split hairs hey?
As of September 23, you will be able to download the game across all platforms free of charge.

Rocket League will be free on all platforms. This includes the current and next generations of consoles (Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5), as well as PC and Nintendo Switch. You will also not need to have PS+ or Switch Online to access the game. Here's how to download it.
- For Xbox players, you will be able to download the game from the Microsoft Marketplace via your console.
- PlayStation players can do the same via the PS Store on your console.
- The free game will also appear in the Switch eStore, allowing Nintendo players to easily access the game.
- For PC, you will have to head to the Epic Games store, rather than steam. For those who had the game on Steam, you will still be able to access it as usual.
Can you play on multiple platforms?
Yes. Cross-platform progression will be available. You can now link multiple accounts through your Epic Games account. By selecting your main account you can sync all of your unlocked customisation items and your ranks to one account, and begin to use this on whichever platform you choose. Over the last few weeks, Psyonix and Epic Games have been introducing many new features to Rocket League. The most notable features are the introduction of a new rank named "Supersonic Legend", an overhaul on the Tournaments system, and a new outlook on the challenges menu, with many more ways to unlock the best customisable items Rocket League has to offer.
Visually, there were many changes to the menus, which will be adapted as players begin to navigate their way around. Season veterans have shown their displeasure at the new menus, which Psyonix have confirmed will likely change as they try to optimise player retention. Psyonix developed "Corey" stated on Reddit: "Our objective for a Free to Play release was to address areas of the game that could be clearer or more intuitive for new players. For the seasoned veterans that populate this subreddit, that can sometimes look like changing things that weren't broken".
He later added that features such as the quickplay button and easier navigation to the training arena from post-game lobbies will return in the future.
