EA Has Spoken Out About In-Game Advertising
Last week, a hole was dug on EA’s behalf. It was reported that a new EA deal could be bringing interactive adverts to their free-to-play games, namely Apex Legends, in collaboration with a new company with experience making ads for mobile games.
With EA’s past of squeezing players for their money, it was no surprise that fans were incredibly upset about this new addition, as of course when EA adopts something it could become commonplace in the gaming industry, and the new form of revenue for the company could line their pockets at the expense of players.
The reveal of these talks was upsetting for many - but luckily for us, the record has been set straight, and by EA themselves.
EA Denies Claims Of In-Game Advertising
In the wake of the reports that EA could introduce ads to their games, a spokesperson has come forward to publicly deny the notion.
“Following incorrect reports suggesting that we are looking to introduce ‘TV-style’ commercials into our games, we wanted to clarify that in-game advertising for console games is not something we’re currently looking at, or have signed any agreements to implement”, the statement reads. “Creating the best possible player experience remains our priority focus.”
The ads had more in common with those in mobile games when the suggestion of EA implementing ads in their games first arose, but even so, this is enough confirmation to assume that the ad structure will not be added to EA’s free-to-play titles. For now, at least.
It’s very possible this could circle around, as Axios reported talks between the company and PlayerWON, the in-game advertising system.
Perhaps they’re just checking in and making some notes - but at least for now, it looks like we don’t have anything to worry about.
