If you were planning on parkouring your way through a zombie apocalypse in 2021, you're fresh outta luck. That's right, Techland has delayed the long-awaited Dying Light 2 into next year. While the sequel to 2015's Dying Light has generated plenty of hype, players were disappointed to learn it'll follow in the footsteps of God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West with a new 2022 release.

Promising to up the ante from its predecessor, Dying Light 2 will continue the story some 20 years after the first. This time around, there's a new protagonist in the form of Aiden Caldwell and a new city to explore as the deadly virus has spread beyond Harran. Techland has been on the marketing assault, but with Dying Light 2 losing its December 7 release date, it now finds itself in a weird position.

What's wrong with Dying Light 2's new release date?

Now that Dying Light 2 has supposedly locked in February 4, fans have noticed that the sequel could get lost in the shuffle. Given that so many games have already been shifted from their 2021 releases - coupled with an already packed 2022 schedule - it means February is a big one for games. Not that Dying Light 2 isn't poised to be a big hitter, however, it might struggle against other AAA titles.

Looking ahead at next February, Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, the new Saints Row, The Evil Dead game, and Horizon Forbidden West are all due out that month. Posting on Twitter, fans spotted the potential problems of the new release date. One player wrote, "February is legit packed now", while another added, "Dying Light 2 delayed from December to February! isn't that the same month as Horizon Forbidden West?! they didn't think that one through lol."

However, someone else said, "Got out of Halo Infinite’s way. Smart move." Whether avoiding the massive release of Halo Infinite and putting Dying Light 2 in the crosshairs of Horizon Forbidden West pays off or not, it's a dangerous move to make.

What else do we know about Dying Light 2?

Of course, the delay has conjured up memories of THAT Cyberpunk 2077 debacle. In fact, the comments section on Techland boss Pawel Marchewka's statement was filled with similar worries. One person simply shared a screenshot of CD Projekt Red's now-infamous apology that the dystopian shooter was going to be delayed again.

Dying Light 2 has had a tumultuous release schedule. The game was first announced at E3 2018, however, it was then thrown into chaos when Game Writer and Designer Chris Avellone left amidst allegations of sexual assault. E3 2019 confirmed a spring 2020 release, however, it was delayed indefinitely in January 2020. May 2020 suggested the troubled title was in dire straits, so the latest update is hardly a confidence booster.

The first trailers for Dying Light 2 have alleviated some of those concerns, but that hasn't stopped critics from claiming things are much worse behind the scenes. With several months for Techland to "polish" Dying Light 2, it's a race against time to prove the naysayers wrong and hope that the sequel lives up to the legacy of its predecessor.
