Download First-Person Resident Evil Before Capcom Takes It Down
While we thought we'd long since locked the doors to the Spencer Mansion and thrown away the key, we're going back to where it all started with a brand new way to play Capcom's Resident Evil. If you loved Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, then boy, do we have a treat for you?!
It's been 25 years since the elite S.T.A.R.S. team tried to lift the lid on Umbrella's experiments, and by now, we think we've seen every variant possible. Trying something different, one modder has added a first-person perspective to the cult classic - giving a whole other level of horror to this shuffling shooter.
What is the first-person Resident Evil?
While we've become accustomed to the third-person or over the shoulder viewpoints of the games, 2017's RE7 broke with tradition and let us get up close and personal with those BOWs (Bio Organic Weapons). It made for a truly terrifying experience, with the pulse-pounding viewpoint also rolling over to this year's Village.
The brilliant brainwave of modder PerroAutonomo means we can play the OG Resi with the modern introduction of a first-person viewpoint. It's important to remember that while we've already shown a modern revamp of the game in first-person, this one tries to be as close to its 32-bit counterpart as possible.
If you love a low-poly munch through the mansion, then PerroAutonomo's mod is exactly the one for you. Away from the fixed perspective that limited us back in 1996, you're able to explore the horrors of the original like never before. Remembering that Rare's GoldenEye 007 was an icon of the same era (and beyond), this mod gives us some serious 007 vibes - and we love it.
Where can you download the first-person Resident Evil?
Grab the mod while you can. Knowing how strict publishers like Capcom are with this kind of thing, PerroAutonomo's mod is likely to take a shotgun to the face before too long. Head over to itch.io to find the download, boot up your PC and off you go. Built in Unity, the game is in a pretty bare-bones state right now and is a far cry from the full game (for now).
The screenshots speak for themselves, with a close-up look at Rebecca Chambers' Racoon City PD badge, the exterior courtyard of the mansion, and its hallowed halls. According to the OP, it's a "not for profit" build that's purely there for the enjoyment of players.
We can't wait to see how the rest of the build pans out, but namely, it shows how alive the undead Resident Evil community really is. On the other end of the spectrum, someone made an impressive mod that lets you flip Village on its head and lose the first-person claustrophobia for third-person. Basically, if you can dream it, someone that loves Resident Evil can make it happen.
