We're all "doomed", as Sony just announced a VR revamp for the fan-favourite of DOOM 3. While it's been 17 years since we first blasted off to Mars in the year 2145 to tear through waves of Pinkies, Bull Demons, and Zombie Privates, however, that doesn't mean we've forgotten its important place in the franchise. Although released as DOOM 3, the game was actually a prequel to the original DOOM and was billed as the first "reboot" of the franchise.

DOOM 3 has since spread from the confines of PC and has been ported to more modern systems. With the most recent release being the DOOM 3: BFG Edition for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One in 2019, some might argue we don't need another version of the game. Now that you can navigate your way through the monster-packed halls of the UAC's Mars base in VR, consider us sold.

What's new with DOOM 3 in VR?

The official PlayStation Blog made the announcement and confirmed Bethesda will be releasing DOOM 3 VR Edition on PlayStation VR on March 29. As well as being available on the PlayStation 4, the survival horror will be backward compatible on the PlayStation 5. As well as the VR-enhanced edition giving you the base game from 2004, the revamped version of the first-person shooter also comes with the "Resurrection of Evil" and "The Lost Mission" expansions, new textures, sound effects, and the all-important virtual reality features.

If you want to know more, the DOOM 3 VR Edition makes the most of the system's Aim controller to really amp up the horror with the game's flashlight-mounted weapons. There's also the ability to check out where you are in the bowels of the facility with your wrist display, while 180-degree quick-turn ability means you can catch those murderous monsters who are quietly sneaking up behind you.

What else do we know about DOOM 3 VR?

Last month, Sony announced a remodelled system that will unveil the next generation of PlayStation VR. When it eventually arrives, the next-gen headset is tipped to include a redesigned controller, the old cable box will be swapped out for a single cord, and there's a higher-resolution screen. The PlayStation 5-centric headset won't be out until later in the year, meaning DOOM 3 VR Edition will have to played on the old PlayStation VR headset for now. Still, we imagine it will be a pulse-pounding trip back to the mid-noughties to relive the horror of DOOM 3 in a whole new way.

There's been a boom in the popularity of survival horror games, with the likes of Capcom's Resident Evil 7 delivering a truly pant-wetting experience. As well as DOOM 3 in VR, there's Nightdive's VR upgrade of System Shock 2 coming in 2021, so there are plenty of terrifying titles for us to try out on PlayStation VR. Sony's big VR showcase also announced After the FallI Expect You To Die 2ZenithFracked, and Song in the Smoke, however, DOOM 3 stole the spotlight.

This isn't the first DOOM game to get the VR treatment. Alongside the release of DOOM VFR (based on the original) in 2017, DOOM 3 was originally planned for release on the Oculus Rift. The Oculus DOOM 3 was cancelled due to a rights dispute with ZeniMax, however, modders unofficially ported the game to the Oculus Quest. Now that an official DOOM 3 VR is on the way, we can't wait to tool up and kick some demon butt.
