Rumours Suggest New Donkey Kong Game Coming From Super Mario Odyssey Creators
Donkey Kong has been left on the sidelines for some time now. The Donkey Kong Country series saw a revival in the Wii U era (and even got its own Switch port for Tropical Freeze), but outside of that, he’s reduced to a placeholder character in the Kart and Party categories. He’s lived in the shadow of Mario for a while, despite being significantly superior in stature. But now, it looks like a massive comeback could be on the cards.
Is Donkey Kong Getting His Own Game By The Super Mario Odyssey Team?
Nintendo YouTuber LonelyGoomba mentioned on Twitter that they’d heard a rumour that a Donkey Kong title from the team behind Super Mario Odyssey team could be on the way, but they decried the rumour as “unlikely”. This prompted Nintendo Life to contact their anonymous and supposedly very credible sources to confirm or deny these rumours, but it’s thought the game would be another 2D or 2.5D title, akin to the Country series. It’s an exciting suggestion, especially as many have declared the series hugely underrated.
The rumours don’t stop there, though.

Another rumour has been doing the rounds, and it looks like it could come in tandem with the suggestion that the Odyssey team could be working on a new DK title. The Nintendo leaker Zippo has offered reason to believe that an announcement for a Donkey Kong project could be coming soon. “It’s the big ape’s 40th anniversary”, he points out, “and while I’m not sure how Nintendo is celebrating the occasion, there is a new 2D DK game being developed by EPD Tokyo. Retro is obviously busy with other things, so Nintendo has taken it upon themselves to bring DK back in as internal series”.
Whether this comes to be true is yet to be seen, but this rumours appearance in tandem with the other rumour is curious. Maybe a new Donkey Kong title really is in the works - only time will tell. But it’s certainly an exciting prospect, and we hope we get to return to the Country series again soon.
