Death Stranding Extended Cut Rumoured For PS4 And PS5

It sounds like Sam Porter Bridges is going to have to strap on his BB (Bridge Baby) all over again, and head out on another perilous delivery for a Death Stranding Extended Cut for PlayStation4 and PlayStation 5. After Hideo Kojima's mind-bending game was praised for its convenient timing of paralleling the coronavirus pandemic, it's clear there's still more of a story to tell with the chance to revisit this warped world.

As the first game to come from Kojima after his fractious split from Konami, Death Stranding was a game that had its own troubled development process. Born from the ashes of the Silent Hills playable teaser, simply known as P.T., Death Stranding kept Norman Reedus' likeness as its lead but moved in a very different direction. With a Black Mirror-inspired rating system, rescuing beached whales from another world, those horrifying foetuses strapped to your body, and avoiding "timefall" rain that instantly ages you, Death Stranding is a game that even those who've played it will struggle to explain. Despite the title's release in 2019, it's primed to be brought to Sony's next-gen console in a big way.

What's the Death Stranding Extended Cut rumour?

Considering Death Stranding is so new, the general consensus agreed it wouldn't need to be ported to PS5. By all standards, the game plays perfectly fine, while recent updates have proved it still works just as intended on Sony's next-gen goliath. Despite all this, a post from a previously reliable source on ResetEra claims one is on the way. Posting on the forum, "Navtra" said, "If you're interested in Death Stranding but haven't played it yet, it might be worth it to wait a lil bit".

Although it's all a bit cryptic, user "DanteAlighieri" replied and asked, "Death Stranding: Extended Edition coming to PS4 and PS5? Just want to confirm if what I got told is true". Keen to clear up any confusion, Navtra simply confirmed “Yup". User "More Human than Human" enquired, "Do you know if the Death Stranding upgrade is coming as a patch or we'll have to buy a separate PS5 version?". Navra gave the final word when they said, "Even if there's an upgrade path I think it will be paid since there's new story content in this version". All in all, it hints that new story elements are definitely on the way.

For now, the story ends there. There's no word on what a Death Stranding Extended Cut would involve and when it could hit the PS5, but it's great news for Kojima after some wrote off the game without giving it a fair shot. Given the chance to right the wrongs of the original, an extended edition could make Death Stranding a proper PS5 title. Fans of the game had always seen it as a next-gen game and feel it was lost at the end of the PS4's life cycle.

Will a Death Stranding Extended Cut really come to PS4 and PS5?

First things first, ResetEra is only a step up from 4Chan in terms of being a reliable source. These days, forums like ResetEra and Reddit have become a breeding ground for fake stories as an attempt to grab upvotes and a little time in the spotlight. Then again, Navtra has a solid track record and previously leaked Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy A Big Adventure, Horizon Forbidden West), Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales), and the Demon’s Souls remake ahead of the PS5 Showcase.

Added to this, Kojima has been teasing some form of Death Stranding DLC for a while now. Last year, he shared a series of tantalising tweets that he was working on something new within the world of Death Stranding. For the hopeful among us, it's something more than the recent addition of Cyberpunk 2077 content. Elsewhere, Reedus once told Wired, "We did Death Stranding, which was a huge hit, and we are in talks to do other stuff". Does it all really add up to a fully extended version of the game? A simple update could add some new content without having to go through all the pomp and ceremony of a re-release. For a game that already polarised critics and gamers alike, a Death Stranding Extended Cut could be accused of a cash-grab from Sony.

It's no secret that Kojima left a lot of Death Stranding content on the cutting room floor, meaning it's easy to imagine an Extended Cut. The world of video games is packed with expanded versions of games. Death Stranding could follow in the footsteps of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest, while we should also remember Kojima is no stranger to extended cuts thanks to the Metal Gear games being known for their re-releases. Until we get the official word from Sony or Kojima, we're left "stranded" by those Death Stranding rumours.
