It's the dawn of a new era as CD Projekt Red's ambitious Cyberpunk 2077 is finally ready to take its first steps out into the cold, harsh, world of video games. Considering the sprawling sci-fi shooter was first announced in 2012, there's been a growing legion of adoring fans who've watched Cyberpunk 2077 grow from a tiny acorn to the open-world giant we see today. Speaking of lengthy development periods, where on Earth is Half-Life 3

Just like any modern game, there's a whole host of trophies and Easter eggs to uncover in Cyberpunk 2077, however, we think we might've just found its best one yet. Alongside Keanu Reeves playing Johnny Silverhand, a character based on Hideo Kojima, and rumours of an Elon Musk cameo, there's also a sneaky Cyberpunk 2077 Half-Life 3 Easter egg to poke fun at Valve's non-existent game. If you're ready, let's get hunting.

Cyberpunk 2077 Half-Life 3 Easter egg: What is it?

Posting on Twitter,  the Valve News Network's Tyler McVicker couldn't help but chuckle at a reference to No Life 3. Hidden in the depts of Cyberpunk 2077 is a file for a fictional game called No Life 3. If you want to know what it's about, hmmm, it might sound a little familiar. The full description reads:

After 50 long years, the wait is finally over! The third and final installment of the No Life series will be available for purchase TOMORROW! As has been reported already, gamers should not expect any major shakeups in regard to the protagonist. We still play as strong silent-type Baron Freimensch. We follow Baron as he ventures to the Arctic Circle to… Well, why spoil it when you’ll have your hands on it in less than 24 hours!

The general synopsis for No Life 3 explains, "With Alice at Baron’s side, and trusty crowbar in hand, those nasty aliens are in for a rude awakening". In case you missed the correlation, Gordon Freeman, Alyx, and the creatures of Xen have been cleverly reimagined as Baron, Alice, and "nasty aliens". Sadly, it looks like a simple Cyberpunk 2077 Half-Life 3 Easter egg is as close as we're going to get to an actual continuation for now.

What happened to Half-Life 3?

After years of rumours that we'd get an official sequel to 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode 2, our prayers were (sort of) answered this year in the form of the VR prequel titled Half-Life: Alyx. There's still hope that Valve could return to the main chronology at some point, but for now, it's left to those joking Cyberpunk 2077 writers to imagine what it would be like.

In 2006, Valve boss Gabe Newell referred to Half-Life 2: Episode 1 as being more like the first part of Half-Life 3 (are you keeping up?) Newell teased a trilogy of episodes, which means Alyx would technically fulfil that quota. Over the years, various episodes have been given the boot  - including "Return to Ravenholm" being tipped as Episode 4. There have been that many leaks and proposed storylines, it's hard to keep up with what's real and what's just a dream.

Let's remember a full-blown Half-Life 3 was in development around 2013/2014 but was axed because the Source 2 engine apparently wasn't stable enough. Still, some 16 years after we first enjoyed Half-Life 2, there are those that refuse to let the idea of a third game go. Will we get Half-Life 3 before the year 2077? Probably not. Then again, stranger things have happened.
