Call of Duty: Mobile World Championships Have Been Cancelled
Call of Duty: Mobile has been a resounding success in the past year, combining the best esports maps that the franchise has ever introduced and the most dangerous weapons ever used by their console counterparts. With the inaugural takeoff season on the smartphones game transcending Call of Duty to the second fastest-growing mobile esports behind PUBG, players have been hit with a stubborn blow by the coronavirus pandemic.
Announced via Twitter, Activision has made the cut-throat decision to cancel the World Championships LAN event and split the remaining prize pool to each regional championships that are already concluded.
The developers said in their statement that "We are putting the health and well-being of our players first," before adding "Our highest priority will always be the well-being of our player, fans, and communities around the world. After carefully reviewing the status of COVID-19 conditions, social distancing, and other safety guidelines across all regions, we do not wish to place players at risk by travelling to a hosted, live event".
The news may not come as much of a shock when you consider the Call of Duty League console teams were forced to play more than half of the first franchised league online, including the World Championships. With $4.6million on the line, it may have sparked uproar from the larger community that the seemingly smaller mobile competitions could be hosted in LAN when the largest console event ever couldn't.
With the prize pool of $750,000 now being split between regions, teams such as KingsClan, Tribe Gaming, and Team Mayhem will all receive an even split of the money added to their regional winnings.
