Despite the Call of Duty fanbase taking a drastic turn away from campaign modes in the past, Sledgehammer Games is attempting to deliver one of the very best stories the franchise has seen yet.

It’s a bold attempt for Vanguard to make after the likes of Black Ops and Modern Warfare perfected the shooter’s narrative formula. Still, Sledgehammer seems adamant that they could be reaching the big leagues with a new story spanning the many conflicts of the Second World War.

If you were looking to get familiar with the story of the game a touch early, however, Call of Duty has a way for you to do so - and it's absolutely free.

Why Is A Call Of Duty: Vanguard Comic Coming For Free?

The very first issue of a Call of Duty: Vanguard comic book series has been published online for users to read entirely for free. The first issue is called "How We Fare". It follows Vanguard protagonist Arthur Kingsley, who leads a troop into adversity.

The comic features Kingsley alongside the likes of Carver Butcher and Polina Petrova. Its creative team is made up of a lot of talented people from the industry - led by Sam Maggs taking the role of writer. Maggs is known for working on the main narrative of Vanguard and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. She’s joined by Brent Friedman, Tochi Onyebuchi, and Stephen Rhodes, with Piotr Kowalski on art and Brad Simpson on colour.

The comic is a great start to a potentially exciting series and is available for free on the Call of Duty Vanguard website.

How Can I Read The Call Of Duty: Vanguard Comic?

The rest of the comic series will be coming issue-by-issue, arriving online to purchase and read from the Vanguard website - with the second issue coming soon. The Call of Duty: Vanguard comic series is expected to roll ut over the next few months, so prepare to follow this story alongside your playthrough of Vanguard itself.

The Vanguard comic is a clever way to both prepare for the events of Vanguard and extends the narrative of the game at the same time. It’s a nice peek into the atmosphere of the next chapter - though it won’t be long until we can get a hold of the real thing.
