Call Of Duty Finally Takes A Stand Against 'Cowardly' Campers
In a surprising face turn, Activision has finally voiced their opinion on the controversial tactic of camping in Call of Duty, calling it "cowardice".
The debate on whether camping is a valid way to play, has gone on for years now. Everyone has their stance, but overwhelmingly it’s a strategy that is looked down on as cheap - seen as a curse to shooters for over a decade.
Call of Duty: What Is Camping?
For those who’ve lived under a rock, camping involves finding a strategic point to hold, usually a corner or the high ground, and waiting for players to come into view, so you can mow them down.
The arcade-style, bombastic nature of most multiplayer shooters from the past few years has promoted the run-and-gun playstyle of getting in your opponent's face, but a camper's strategy runs counter to that, which is why it draws everyone's ire.
When Did Activision Call Out Campers?
Activision released a blog post for this year's Call of Duty: Warzone Halloween event, named The Haunting, which draws from last year's Zombie Royale event. This year, they swapped zombies for spooky ghosts (even adding Ghostface) and a fear metre.
Like something from the Amnesia series, if the fear metre rises, then you’ll start to have vivid hallucinations that mess with your mind. Seeing teammates K.I.A, encountering ghosts, and taking damage increase your fear metre - along with the old camping trick, which the blog post directly called "cowardice".
Clearly, someone at Activision had enough of campers this year and decided to wage a vendetta against them. Admirable, for sure, but a war they’ll never win as long as people want that coveted 1.00 K/D ratio.
The Haunting event is available right now, but it’s yet to be seen how well the fear metre will deter campers. It’s also worth wondering if the next entry in the COD series, Vanguard, will have any means of halting the tactic.
