Borderlands Movie Gives First Look At Claptrap
A clattering bucket of bolts is set to rumble into our lives and steal our hearts, as Eli Roth's Borderlands movie has just revealed a first look at Jack Black's Claptrap. While the colourful cast of characters includes a well-stocked roster of fan-favourites, it's the rusted Claptrap that looks like he's set to steal the limelight.
The road to a live-action Borderlands movie has been a long one, but with casting kicking off last year, it's been a breakneck ride to get to where we are today. With an all-star cast of Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Black, Borderlands is already shaping up to be Roth's very own version of Jumanji.
What does Claptrap look like in Borderlands?
Filming on Borderlands kicked off in Hungary on April 1 and wrapped on June 22. With a relatively short filming window, the A-list stars have polished off their roles as Borderlands heads into post-production. To celebrate this milestone moment, the official @BorderlandsFilm Twitter shared a snap of Claptrap in all his glory.
Claptrap looks like a doppelgänger for his video game counterpart, which fits with Hart's promise that the movie is just like the games. Only recently, the Roland actor told Collider, "The fanbase that follows the game is already huge and unreal, but I don't think they even have a clear understanding of how close we're coming to the game. It looks like the game. It's unbelievable, truly unbelievable".
Unlike Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil movies, at least it sounds like we're in for a faithful adaptation of Gearbox's famous IP. While we've got a first look Claptrap, Borderlands is still keeping a final look at its human cast a secret. Instead, the account included a shadowy outline of Blanchett and co. in their roles.
Who is Claptrap in Borderlands?
In Gearbox Software's Borderlands series, Claptrap is a disgruntled Hyperion robot that mainly features as an NPC. Despite the character's reception as being "annoying" and branded the franchise's "worst character" by some, he's grown in popularity and was even a playable character in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
It remains to be seen how Claptrap plays into Borderlands, but with the movie's synopsis teasing Blanchett's Lilith teaming up with a rag-tag cast of rogues to go up against a sinister corporation, those familiar with the games will know what to expect. Either way, we're sure Black's portrayal of Claptrap will lean heavily on the actor and the character's comedic roots.
