The battle royale genre for many is a little oversaturated. We’re rather spoilt for choice to be fair - these titles certainly have their nuances, but at the end of the day, you’ll still be shooting guns at enemy teams as a ring closes around you.

Whether it’s Fortnite, PUBG, or Apex Legends, it’s hard to escape the fact that you’re playing a very similar game with just a slight shift in nuance. What the genre needs, honestly, is a little bit of variety. And nothing says ‘variety’ like vampires.

Bloodhunt - A New Vampire Battle Royale

Bringing something of a supernatural flair to the genre, Bloodhunt could turn the tides of the battle royale entirely. Announced at the Summer Game Festival and based on the world of the tabletop RPG Vampire: The Masquerade, the game boasts a beautiful gothic aesthetic set across a gorgeous Prague to explore and put your abilities to good use. The game is produced by Swedish studio Sharkmob, a new development studio that is working on two other secret projects alongside the Hot Topic battle royale in Unreal Engine 5.

The game follows sects of vampires at war across Prague, in events triggered by the arrival of strike teams from the Second Inquisition. It utilises the pre-established world of Vampire: The Masquerade that was created in 1991 and brought the world of warring undead to the tabletop. The game will see you play as a ruthless vampire or a human using supernatural abilities to stave them off.

Bloodhunt looks like it could be bringing something fresh and exciting to the battle royale genre. It might seem like a Hot Topic Warzone on the surface, but the special abilities look to bring a twisted and musical flair to large lobbies, in a turn that could play like an amped-up Dishonoured with a touch more flesh-tearing savagery. Only time will tell if the game will be able to dominate the genre, but one thing’s for sure - it’s got a hell of a lot of potential.
