What makes a game so special? In a franchise that churns out new games every year, how does one singular title stand the test of time and win over the hearts of loyal fans?

Well, ask Treyarch. Their Black Ops 2 title, released in 2012, was voted as the best Call of Duty of the decade, pipping titles such as World at War, Modern Warfare 2, and the rest of its series.

Black Ops 2's map design is one of the most praised aspects of the game, often being able to be picked up and glossed over to fit any era in which the franchise opts to visit. Exemplified by the multiple renditions of Nuketown which spanned from the 1980s to 2065, Black Ops 2's maps, weapons and designs still influence every Call of Duty released to date.

So, looking forward to other games, which title can become the game of the decade between 2020 and 2029?

The debate spans further than just Call of Duty, as Black Ops 2 only reigns supreme in this franchise. Looking outside of the franchise and into the whole gaming sphere, games such as Super Mario Galaxy 2 top rating charts followed by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2. However, the same concepts still exist. Engaging timeless maps and content will continue to dominate, alongside good plots and character development.

Despite being early on in the decade, the first wave of contending title have already emerged.

Sticking with Call of Duty, Black Ops Cold War has yet to ignite the hearts of fans, relying on Black Ops 2 content to carry it through. Warzone, however, has begun to dominate multiplayer games attracting some huge streamers and players from all tangents of the gaming sphere. Although it has many teething problems, the opportunity to have an ever-changing meta will undoubtedly help Warzone stand the test of time.

VALORANT could also be in contention, although FPS multiplayer games rarely rank high on the charts unless they're truly groundbreaking. Despite being an unpopular opinion, VALORANT's success ties in with how it can unseat Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). If it continues to steal the top talent from the popular game, it could easily begin to top charts. It's unfortunate that its success relies on the unhinging of a classic though.

Over in the RPG genre that normally sees the better titles soar in popularity. Cyberpunk 2077 set off to a bumpy start, but as the time goes on and upon the multiplayer release in months to come occurs, there is room for it to revive its promised glory.

The yet-to-be-released Halo Infinite, Starfield, God of War, and Bioshock 4 also have anticipated fans brimming to the surface, which could all break the charts records. Further titles that are rumoured to be in development could be able to drop the bomb. GTA 6 could be monumental should the developers be able to develop it in the first half of the decade. Grand Theft Auto's have always been able to have an extremely long shelf life, but a trip down memory lane alongside some new content that breaks the boundaries of society again would definitely be in contention come 2019. The same would go for The Elder Scrolls VI, following on from the success of Skyrim.

There are a lot of titles in the pipeline that could wager their bets to become the game of the decade. Where would you place your 20p?
