Representation in gaming remains a hot topic. It’s crucial that everyone can see themselves in the media they consume, and though bigots might think they know best, it certainly won’t stop gaming companies for offering better and better representation every year.

The FPS genre has received the most flak for it, with a historical sum of hate being pointed at EA for putting a woman on the cover of Battlefield V - but they’ve kept it up, as they know it’s for the very best.

And now, their representation efforts are taking another bold step as Battlefield 2042 first non-binary specialist has been revealed.

Battlefield 2042 First Non-Binary Specialist

It has been officially revealed by EA and DICE that Battlefield’s very first non-binary specialist will be making their arrival in Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield 2042 first non-binary specialist, Emma “Sundance” Rosier, was announced alongside the rest of the playable characters, but many fans caught onto the fact that Sundance was the only specialist who had they/them pronouns attributed to them. As one fan tweeted asking after the fact, the Lead Community Manager for the game replied with “Yep. Sundance is non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them.”

They’ll be launching in the game alongside Rao, Dozer, Ji-Soo Paik, and Angel.

What Other Gaming Characters Are Non-Binary?

There are actually an incredible wealth of other characters in gaming who identify as non-binary or gender non-conforming, and you could have been playing the game without even knowing in. Apex Legends’ Bloodhound has been confirmed to be non-binary, as has the SungWon Cho-voiced FL4K from Borderlands 3.

Frisk from Undertale has been confirmed to be non-binary by developer Toby Fox, with the character being referred to exclusively with they/them pronouns throughout.

And now that Battlefield’s new operative is joining them, it’s clear that gaming’s efforts to boost representation keeps getting stronger with every instance. Welcome to the fight, Sundance.
